I have Adobe Photoshop 4, Corel Photopaint 8, as well as Micrografx Picture Publisher 8, and Picture Publisher is my favorite one for day-to-day photo editing.

It has quick, easy, and to me, intuitive features such as select (masking) feature paint-on mask and mask restraints to keep constant aspect ratio or constant size, and ability to resize mask while holding restraints in effect -- all on one convenient command bar.

The "quick zoom" feture allows just that, and is easier to use than the "navigator" on Photoshop.

It is object-oriented rather than layer oriented, which again seems more intuitive for beginners. You can mask out seperate objects on an original image, such as face, hat, shirt, tie, etc. and individually select one object, meaning that all the effects (apply color, filter, etc.) apply only to that one object and ignore the others.

It is true the effects such as unsharp mask and gaussian blur are not nearly so fine-tunable as on Photoshop, but nevertheless they are there.

I think for the money (about $100) you can't go wrong with Picture Publisher.

email me for further comments.
