Use balance control in Windows to choose the langauge. If using a stand-alone VCD or DVD/VCD player try to use the koreoke feature to turn off one side.

VCD has CD quality stereo, consisting of one left and one right audio channel. Generally, Cantonese is stored in the left and Mandarin is stored in the right channel. Most VCD players will play stereo as default. Hence, you will hear Cantonese in the left and Mandarin in the right speaker. Switch to play left channel only and you will hear Cantonese in both speakers in mono only etc. etc..

However, a few badly made pirated VCDs have both dialects stored in both the audio channels accidentally. In this case, you are stucked will listening to Cantonese and Mandarin together no matter what channel you select.

If you play the Video CD on your stand alone DVD player, press the button for audio and you should be able to choose which channel to listen to. This also works if you have a PC-DVD encore installed on your computer.
