From MAVICA to ???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am a casual photographer, mostly photographing people indoors and sceneries outside during vacations. I started off with Olympus D320 and hated it because of weird skin colors with the flash. I now have a Mavica FD81, which has been excellent except for one thing. It is so bulky that it is often left behind. So, what is my best choice in the market today, given the following constraints: 1) Must be pocket sized or at least *very* portable 2) Must have optical zoom(2X is fine) 3) Prefer(not a must) compact flash storage(because of high capacity) 4) cost < $1000 5) Must have resolution greater than 640 x 480 6) reasonable reproduction of the following: - Sunny outdoors - low light(indoors) portraits with flash - night lights of big cities

Is there such a digicam, or am I asking too much? Thanks for the help.

I can suggest the Nikon Coolpix 950,it can cover all you are asking for, plus manual handling. I used it with excellent results.

The nikon 950 does sound good, especially with an attached external flash for those night pics, except there goes your pocket size.

The canon a50 fits the bill, but the flash won't compare to nikon 950 with an external flash. That sucker is tiny!! So is the oly 2000.
