two winter trees

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

This one was taken last winter. The trail was there (I did not make it going back and forth). EF 17-35. I guess I'm supposed to say that the original picture is sharper w/ more contrast and color depth... Yes, the original picture looks better to me - this is what I got scanned from Fair Lawn Kodak CD.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I like the concept, but I would have cropped the sky just above the tree tops, and I would have cropped to the "trail" was coming out of the bottom of the shot instead of the left side.

It look a little soft for a Photo CD scan. Did you sharpen in Photoshop? Maybe try again with a different lab.

Although I like the idea, I'm not sure the execution is all that it could be. I agree that the cropping should be handled differently and, in fact, to my eye, this works better as a square composition (cropping the bottom third out). Also having to do with the overall composition/cropping is the somewhat distracting lean of the tree to the nearby right edge, leading the eye right out of the photograph.

Color balance seems to be off, as well as the exposure. Color balance could have been corrected in PhotoShop, but the exposure can only be corrected on site. (The sky appears to be overly cyan and could benefit from a shift toward blue, while the snow could definitely be whiter - but then, the highlights which are already white, would certainly be blown out).

It may be that a re-scan with some pre/post scan corrections would provide a better image, including adressing the aforementioned softness.

Don't mean to be harsh - as I said, I like the idea but the execution, in my opinion, is lacking.

One of the most refreshing, different and artistic images I have seen on this forum. I would not change a thing. It has the soul of its own. Thanks for sharing.

I agree with Stan. I would suggest shooting the whole thing again, and pay more attention to cropping in the camera. Pat

I agree with Bahman, the image is very nice.
