Whatis John Paul II's authority over the civil calendar, especially in regards to computers. I have recently heard that he has authority over the dates in computers.

During the middle ages the Pope had authority in a catholic Europe over a lot of civilian matters. For instance Pope Gregory XIII, in 1582 dropped 10 days from the Julian calendar in use since roman times, and decreed that every four years should be a leap year. This authority over civil matters has since then disapeared.

In my former answer I may have given the impression that year 1582 was part of the middle ages, when in fact the middle ages had ended more than 100 years before. What I meant was that the "civil" authority of the Pope didn't disappear on any given moment, but it was a gradual process.

Dear David, The Pope has no control over calendars and the only control he has with computers is on his own. Ellen
