Bought a fake Lawson: recourse?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Exchange: A Forum for Antiques and The Arts : One Thread

Bought an oil painting at an auction conducted by a legitimate dealer, advertised as "by Ernest Lawson" and signed E. Lawson. Three dealers expert in Lawson have all said "no way". What legal recourse, if any, do I have?

Response to Bought a fake Lawson, recouse?

You need to check the terms and conditions you agreed to when you participated in the auction; they will be featured on any catalogue provided by the auctioneer.

Was this "legitimate dealer" a LICENSED auctioneer? If so, you need to complain to an appropriate state agency about him, and any auctioneering association with which he may be affiliated.

I think the federal government also might have an interest in your situation, although I don't know what division would handle that.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I wish you luck in your recourse.
