Handeling .DAT files on a MAC.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi there,

I have a big problem. I have a CDi (or VCD) with a .DAT file on it, I want to convert this file to mpeg so I can make a VCD of it. I downloaded a program called dat->mpeg but this doesn't work, then I tried a utility called Video Ripper. I saw that there is a function in Video Ripper thats called dat to mpeg but I think this isn't working yet. I also tried Mpack from Astarte this does work but it's verry slow (12 hours, 1 cd).

Is there a way to convert .dat files from cd to mpeg? Is it normal that I can't copy .dat files to my harddisk? (read error, on every .dat file I try)

Can you guys please help me!!!!!!!!!!!

setup:Popwermac 8600/200, 96mb, 2x 2gig HD, panasonic CDR 4speed

I have both MAC and PC. I know on the PC side, you can just rename .dat to .mpeg. I have done this. There was an answer on the conversion from .dat to .mpeg several days ago in this forum. The answer was a simple renaming and Adaptec EZ CD Creator Deluxe can handle both .mpeg and .dat file directly. As far as your inability to copy .dat file, I suspect that the CD drive can't handle VCD files. I have a UMAX SuperMAC clone with Matsushita ( Panasonic) drive that won't play VCD. I found out from the UMAX website that the problem was the Matsushita driver. I added a Yamaha CD-RW and this drive does not have the problem. When I get home, I'll try on my computers to solve your problem. If you have Virtual PC, try renaming the file.

I have many good answers from this SuperMac discussion group, you may want to post your question there. http://lowendmac.com/supermacs/

Good Luck !.

Use Astarte's CD-Copy. It will read Video CD MPEG tracks and store them in separate files which can be re-written to a new VideoCD using Adaptec Toast.
