List of Dates

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

As we approach two more predicted "mini-Y2K" dates (990901 and 990909), I am attempting to locate a listing of over fifty such dates I read somewhere - perhaps here. Any pointers on where to locate such a list?

Andy,

Excellent links - thank you.

Andy Ray:

Please note that most of us here (from my observation) do not expect 09/09/99 to cause any significant problems.

There could be some, I know Robert Magnus has come on record concerning the Michigan State Police being VERY nervous, but by and large the technical folks I've seen weigh in do not seem to be worried.

Here's another link.

Good point Jon. Andy Ray, why not poll us doomers now and see what small fraction expects problems instead of waiting until the date passes and selecting one crackpot's post (which may even be a polly plant), and using it to deride our position?

I see no problems with any of my code. EOF is all 9's, not 090999 or 990909 in my environment. I just can't speak for everybody else out there.

Andy Ray

Well that is a better question.

May I recommend checking out the latest GartnerGroup Y2K assessment, the link below will take you directly to the section you are inquiring about.

4.0     When Year 2000 Problems Will Occur

Year 2000 World Status, 2Q99: The Final Countdown

and a quote

"A much larger volume of date-forward processing and forecasting is done per quarter, rather than per year or for multiple years; therefore, beginning in October 1999, we will see a significant increase in failures."

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. This question was asked in the same spirit as the others - it just seems to have been less misunderstood and/or interpreted.

As you know, I'm on the "doomer" side, but I don't think 9/9/99 is gonna be a big deal. All data is either in a string and each piece of data is in a specific location in the string, located either by counting characters/bytes, or some sort of delimiter; or it is in specific memory locations. So 9999, 99999999, whatever may be scattered all over the place, but if those digits are not in date "locations", it is immaterial. Also a date of 9/9/99 might not even be those actual characters in its stored date format. I doubt that the "if = 99999 then crash" test is looking for a date, in most cases.

Any mainframers got a comment/substantial (not nit-picking) correction on this?

Before you were asking questions that needed speculation not documented material. Of course in the past you seemed to have a way of twisting speculation.

where's that date you promised me Andy Ray?

-- Porky (Porky@in.cellblockD), August 30, 1999.

Brian,

Earlier, I was attempting to ascertain the reasoning behind certain beliefs. Those who were/are offended at having their beliefs inquired after took offense - which is normal and to be expected in a certain percentage of any population.

While I disagree with your opinion of my motives and with your assessment of Y2K, I certainly respect and respected your right to express yourself in whatever fashion you choose - believing (as I choose) that folly on either side of a debate merely serves to chip away the unnecessary and ultimately reveal the truth.

Andy Ray back in June

25 June 1999

In my studies of the reaction to the issue, I have collected thousands of quotes from people making fantastic and catastophic claims (in an effort begun 1 Jan 99). I plan to post these quotes on 3 Jan 00 on a website dedicated to giving pause to those who would practise fear-mongering in the future.

Dear What a difference,

Those plans are still in place - the website has actually been constructed. The difference has been in the reaction - or lack of misinterpretation - and I pleasantly and heartily agree...what a difference between then and now! :)
