Please help me to understand how each Pope gets their name? How did the current Pope get his name John Paul the II? Thank-you, Mrs. Cadwell

Response to the Popes name

It's their choice. After election they are asked. What name do you choose?

Br. Rich - Would the Pope have to obtain his mother's permission on the choice of name??? +Peace+

Response to the Popes name

Considering that they are sealed inside the Vatican when this happens and cut off from the world. That would be a bit hard to do.

Response to the Popes name

Only to respont to the other half of the question. Albino Luciani chose the name of John Paul to express his intention to continue and fulfill the work of his predecessors in implementing the Vatican II deliberations (namely John XXIII and Paul VI). Karol Woytjla took the same name in the same spirit (that is, to continue the work of Luciani).
