New "resort" at Clinton State Park will remove O' terrain.

A new "resort" being planned for Clinton State Park will remove a bit of the orienteering terrain. The plan was shown in today's Lawrence Journal-World. The development will be on the peninsula that is south-and-west from the marina.

It is planned for a relatively small, but nice, part of the forest. It will not have a huge effect on how the park is used for orienteering (it will take out an area we've put a few controls in). But, it will make trail runs (and eagle watching) less interesting.

On the other hand, it might make for an attractive lodging site should we host a major O' meet.

It might also be a place we could sell O' maps (with a permanent course on them).

The proposed new resort is primarily on the peninsular between the marina jetee and a camp ground. The Short Course champs probably had 2, at most 3, controls in the resort area. I'm pleasantly surprised how little we've lost for orienteering and trail usage. Actually if the diagram is exactly right; the wooded shoreline could still have a trail go through it.

Nevertheless, it would be prudent to keep an eye out on what's going on. Sometimes these things aren't all they appear to be on the surface. I can think of a couple of places where a privately-owned enterprise was set up in a state park. (Much bigger than a hot dog stand). It caused considerable disruption to terrain, traffic, and the relationship between organized groups and the state parks.

If we have to, we can make this thing dissappear... We've taken down grocery stores before!
