coat- severe matting problem

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

I have a problem with my brown classic tabby. Her fur sems to mat very easily, especially on her underside. She does not tolerate brushing, and I had to have her clipped at the vet under anesthesia this spring. Is there any kind of spray or shampoo which would help? She is very sweet but feisty when I try to brush her. The clipping ruined the appearance of her ruff, and seemed an extreme tactic.

Sarah matting is an issue with all Coons. Some seem to have it worse than others. As you have found out, if you do not start them young and brush them on a regular basis you are going to end up at the vet's. Ask around and you may find a groomer that is talented (there are some) in getting the cats to behave. The real problem is that putting them under general anesthesia once or twice a year is not a good thing for their health despite what some may tell you. The last two coons I had that were anesthetized for dematting both died of strokes at early ages. Coincidence? In any case your best bet is to start getting the cat used to it by using a small brush/comb and just coming their head or in a spot they don't mind so much and work your way from there. Good luck
