Do we still need iodine?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

I'm a journalist, not a medical practitioner, so I need input from ya'll.

I've been searching for iodine, mercurochrome (remember that stuff) or methiolate (remember) and I can't find any. Is it still available? Do we even need it? Are there products on today's markets that render those useless?

Thanks.

Wal-Mart carries these items in the aisle with all of the usual antibiotic creams. We stocked some, although I don't know if they will be useful. Iodine soap (surgical soap) is what the doctor had us use on a bad burn. Alcohol and hydrogen peroxide is cheap, so stock up on those too.

These items can be had in quantity for a very reasonable price at veterinary supply stores (just use a search engine) and/or any drugstore. Local feed stores also carry them.

your best bet would be Betadine (iodine soln), hibiclens (non iodine means non-staining), hydrogen peroxide, and rubbing alcohol. All non- Rx and available at most pharmacies.
