Taking Shortcuts

Just released on UPI:

CHICAGO, Aug. 23 (UPI) ComEd executives apologized for the utility's reliabilty problems this summer to three Illinois congressmen at a hearing convened a day after a blackout closed the Chicago's Field Museum.

David Helwig, ComEd's new senior vice president of transmission and distribution, said, "ComEd has made a commitment to do whatever it takes to complete a ground zero approach to resolving the problems and will spare no effort to do so."

Helwig attributed recent outages that blacked out the South Loop and the Near West Side this month to poor maintenance, saying the utility was "taking shortcuts and not being as thorough as we could have been.. ."

Wow! This makes me feel much better about Y2K - especially the not being as thorough as we could have been. Can you spell "Blackout?"
