"Secret Survey" site -- is it actually Jim Lord's doing?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Forum Moderators : One Thread

The forum threads discussing this have raised the question.

I've e-mailed Lord as follows, cc. to Chuck and Diane:

Reference: http://www.jimlord.to/SecretSurvey.cfm

Jim, is this actually your site?

I think you can understand my caution here. Counter-efforts, disinformation, and booby traps are not unheard of in this Y2K business.

If it is, congratulations!

There's one problem, though. Both download links fetch the MSWord *.doc file. PDF format is announced but isn't available.

There are several inappropriate hyphens in the text. Is this usual in Lord's material?

Answers

Tom,

This is real. (which of course will become evident over the next twenty four hours.)

And,

He's NOT working alone.

None of us are. At least, not anymore.

I think I get your drift here, Critt, as to not "working alone".

What clarification do you anticipate in the next 24 hours? (A blockbuster on CNN is hard to imagine.)

Well -- his answer was brief and to the point--
"it is mine. it is legit."

Which settles that part of it. The other part is the veracity of the leaked material itself. Because leaks from insiders are inherently more credible than official announcements, the use of "leaks" by various agencies to spread misleading or false information has become quite an art form. Everyone who matters these days knows that "control of the conversation", as Michael Lindemann terms it, is essential.

Given the earlier Naval War College study, and now this survey, it begins to appear that some element in the Navy command structure is trying to present a substantive counterfoil to Koskinen's "Don't worry, be happy" line.

I hope Critt's prediction works out.

For myself, I have no trouble believing that this is genuine. I'm quite convinced of the actuality of many things each far more bizarre than this 'survey.'

It's Jim Lord, Tom.

In case anyone missed it, the hot thread has links to all the others...

Koskinen's "Take" On Jim Lord's Pentagon Papers (Steve Davis-- Coalition 2000))

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id= 001GgI

In a private e-mail I thanked Steve Davis for responding directly at TBY2K. One of his phrases back bothered me...

I had not been in the pit of despair for a long time but I still have thick skin. -- Steve Davis

The Pit Of Despair?

I have to admit, that comment surprises me.

On this thread Brooks cites this one.

Lots of messages on this site -- several very articulate and noticeable examples are signed "trident/delta". Each of these ends with "Semper fi." I wonder if this might not be Arlin in another mask....?

On the "survey" itself -- I expect certainty is beyond our reach -- as trident/delta notes, you gotta go with your confidence level.

Hi Tom,

no it wasn't me...I don't generally use pseudonyms, and besides my background is with the Army...'semper fi' is a USMC slang equivalent for their motto "semper fidelis" (always faithful). Far be it from me to pretend to be a jarhead - both of my parents were married to each other, and not otherwise related!

Arlin

Well, shucks, Arlin-- so much for theory. Whoever trident/delta is, s/he seems to be of sound mind and of a worldview that reminded me of yours.

"Far be it from me to pretend to be a jarhead - both of my parents were married to each other, and not otherwise related! "

rolf!!! dagnabbit Arlin! You're missed!

Diane, that comment by Steve is exactly the kind of remark that is bothering me too. I think I've probably overreacted a bit to his tone but in my mind it's like I'm reading the words of a man very impressed with the fact that he was spending the day with the Y2k Czar and managed to get a quick response.

Anyway...enough of that. I appreciate everything you did and all your efforts. We all want the same thing and that is for more to be disclosed.
