Search for Documentation Backing FAA's Independent Y2K Audit Turns Up Empty Handed

CODY, Wyo., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- In a twist sure to raise the eyebrows of people insisting the Millennium Bug has already been licked, Internet news site Y2KNEWSWIRE.COM recently completed an exhaustive investigation into the FAA's Year 2000 compliance claims. After conducting eleven interviews and lodging half a dozen requests for public documents backing the independent audit conducted by the SAIC, Y2K Newswire concluded the investigation empty-handed.

A July 21, 1999 FAA press release claims, ``100% Y2K compliance'' and explains, ``Data verifying that all FAA systems were implemented as Y2K compliant have been examined and approved by Science Applications International Corp., Vienna, Va., an independent verification and validation contractor.'' However, when Y2K Newswire contacted the FAA to obtain public documentation summarizing or detailing these audits, no documentation was available. Y2K Newswire was told to contact the SAIC.

When Y2K Newswire contacted the SAIC, it was first told that SAIC could not reveal the name of the person in charge of the Y2K work. Later, the SAIC offered a legalistic disclaimer, saying, ``SAIC is not in a position to confirm or deny that we've done any such work for the FAA.''

Given the magnitude of the apparent achievement by the FAA -- being the federal government's first agency to achieve 100% Y2K compliance -- Y2K experts consider it highly unusual that documentation summarizing this good news would not be made available to the public. ``When you achieve something this great,'' says Mike Adams, creator of Y2K Newswire, ``you want to shout it to the world. For the FAA to have conquered this highly complex Y2K remediation process and yet not have the organizational skills to publicly describe how it was done seems incongruent.''

Y2K Newswire also looked at the (Department of Transportation) Inspector General's memos covering the FAA's Y2K remediation process and was pleased to find what Adams calls, ``... an attitude of seriousness and professionalism'' there. ``The Inspector General,'' says Adams, ``has done a good job of forcing the FAA to address serious oversights in their original remediation processes.''

Based on the Inspector General memos, Adams admits the FAA is involved in, ``serious remediation efforts.'' But unlike FAA administrator Jane Garvey, Adams has no plans to fly on December 31.

Answers

All government statements of this sort have to be viewed skeptically, simply because there is no motivation whatever to be truthful if the truth is bad. The same goes for the banks and utilities.
