There is a vast literature which explains and supports free market economics, and which also explains why statist/socialist alternatives don't work and are deadly to the human condition. The titles listed above are just a sample of some of the best, and a good place to begin reading.

If Y2K does wreak havoc with our society and economy, much rebuilding will have to commence. Leaving this task to the government will only guarantee piling one disaster on top of another. Empowering people to take the initiative for themselves and to make the best of their own situations is known to work much better. The above authors will explain why much better than I can.
