potassium iodide

The thyroid can only absorb so much iodine in a day.The rational for using potassium iodide is to saturate the thyroid with "good" iodine therefore blocking out "bad" radioactive iodine. If the above is true then why not just use vitamins that contain 100% of the iodine recommended instead of potassium iodide tablets?

Desertj98,

The iodine is different than those found in vitamins. Do a web search on KI and potasium idodate.

"100% recommended daily amount" does not necessarily equal the same amount of iodine required to saturate the thyroid. I'm guessing the thyroid probably has a larger capacity for iodine absorption than our bodies' nutritional need for it.

There is a site by Bruce Beach called "You will Survive Doomsday" at http://www.webpal.org/survival/books/Doomsday/default.htm where he discusses "23 myths" about surviving nuclear war. But there are dealing with radiation tips there, too. It is _long_. For those with potassium iodide question, check out Myth # 11, just a few paragraphs. The last 2 paragraphs may address your question a bit more.

Yes, it takes a whole lot to saturate the thyroid. The Potassium iodide pills are so intense that if broken open (or in half for kids) they are very, very hard to swallow. Taste unbelievably bad and burn, too. Anyway, you can read articles about it at www.anbex.com. Their price is not the best, though. $12 plus $4 shipping for 14 pills. For one person for two weeks. The Country Store in Vancouver sells 100 tablets for $18. countrystore@healthyharvest.com Shivani

Note that a pound of KI is about 3500 doses, so since 1/2 a kilo is a bit over a pound so that's less than $0.05 a dose. See http://home.earthlink.net/~kenseger/surv/IODINE.TXT for details.
