What's In Short Supply At Stores?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Anyone finding shortages of surivival items? I went to WalMart today and I was shocked at the stock levels of certain items. No lamp oil, a few wicks, 2 Coleman camp stoves, 20 cans of SPAM, no distilled water. I asked the clerk what the story was and he said that they were having trouble getting certain items and people were buying faster than what they can stock the shelves. I needed an extra kerosene container and they were out of stock!

Been looking for a generator for a month now and can't find one! Where do I get one?

Interestingly, a few days ago when I stopped by my local Target store I was shocked to see that they have started selling Coleman wood burning fireplace/stoves at $109.00. This is an item I had never seen at Target before. They are for outdoor use only and there were two dozen of them at the time. They had a fairly decent stock of other items as well and I managed to pick up some of the items I needed. I decided to check back later to see if things were selling well.

Well, today I made it back and they had sold 7 of the Colemans! That's 7 in only three days! I didn't even think the things would sell. Also, much of the camping gear was gone as well.

Maybe people are looking to do some camping, I don't know. I have been keeping an eye on things and stuff was moving faster than I remember in the past.

I think a lot of it has to do with the mentality of the local media. Here in my city, the media is 100% asleep at the wheel. And there are no shortages. Two hours away, where my mom lives, the media GI 100%. And there are stories of shortages in the news there.

IMHO, the places that are experiencing shortages right now will fare better than the ones stocked up, because when the panic begins their pipeline will contain more goods.

Home Depot has plenty of kerosene!!!!

Home Depot just got a very large shipment of generators of all sizes. The largest assortment I have seen there at once. Also, they are set aside from the normal generator area, as a sale, but no mention of Y2K.

I was also at the Army Navy surplus store this weekend, and the mountain of 55 gal soy sauce barrels was down to 5 or 6. This within the last week or so. The supply of less desirable barrels continues to be plentiful.

I would say the snowball is beggining to roll.

Here in SC PA state, there are plenty of generators, camping supplies, etc. The media is 100% asleep as far as I can see. And the people definitely are.

Seem to almost always be out of Shotgun slugs (12 gauge). Walmart has the best price if you catch them in stock. They really are a kick to fire, and I don't believe anyone could take one and keep coming.
