Yale University has trouble

Like the World Bank, Yale University, which just changed over to their new accounting system, is making errors by sending direct deposits to the wrong bank.

But ... but we were told that there would be "no problems."

This is another example of why you need to get a physical check handed to you every payday. I put just enough money into a checking account to cover bills and I get the rest back in cash.

to cash in hand:

Very interesting,

right now with direct deposit being used for both my jobs, I have, literally all of my bills eithor debited from my checking account, or billed to my only credit card. The credit card I pay off once a month (thus simplifying the thankless task of paying those bills every month), and the same philosophy goes with the direct debit of my checking account with the rest of my monthly bills. It makes it convenient. It sounds like as Jan 1, 1999 approaches, that if things go haywire, then I would be potentially setting myself up for a world of trouble. 1. ie., if my direct deposit does not get in on time (if at all) 2. if my debit accounts start debiting the wrong amounts?

Wow,

So what do you think I should do.

You did mention stopping the direct deposits...

Stop your direct deposit NOW, and be in control of your own finances. Pay off debt if you have the money or get one loan and pay off everything so your not writing checks to several different creditors. With a paycheck in hand and cash in hand you won't have to worry about any banking glitches. I pay for everything with cash! I don't even use an ATM card. Last year I used my ATM card at a gas station, three days later I get a letter from my bank apologizing for double debiting all ATM transactions that I made on the 30th day. Also, by paying cash for everything, there's no paper trail left behind.

Not only that but we are finding cash is King! We bought our years worth of hay...those large round bales. They cost $35 each. I asked the farmer how much discount if we paid in cash and asked for no receipt. I thought if I were lucky, maybe 5%. He discounted it $5/ bale and for 47 bales that was pretty good!! $235 will buy a lot of beans and rice. Did the same with the electrical contractor that installed our 40 kw generator. Same with contractor that remodled a bathroom. Kash is King! And no paper trail!

Cash is a very liberating thing to have. Your right Taz, you can wheel and deal and save $$$ when you deal in cash. It's just like shopping at the flea market, you negotiate the price and when you say "I have cash," that really tickles their ears!

Thomas, just a question, and I'm not being sarcastic...but how old are you? What did you do re: banking/bills before you set up direct deposit?

Being one of the ancient ones, it just tickled me to see that there was someone for whom Direct deposit/debit was the only thing they had experience with. It never occurred to me that this might be the case for some people.

You do realize that the reason you get a cash discount is because the people you hire have no intention of paying income tax on it don't you? Know what that means? HIGHER TAXES FOR THE REST OF US!!!

What you are doing is nothing short of theft and contributing to the crime of tax fraud.

TECH32,

Higher taxes have been levied on you because you are accepting of the current un-Constitional, fraudulent schemes of politicians that YOU have elected, not because someone gives cash for their purchase.

Now all of us are under suspicion, criminals, because the government and the ignorantly, willing public have made true free trade wrong. They have made Y2K preparations, though prudent and responsible, irresponsible/criminal-like in much the same manner. We will all pay a terrible price for much of our society listening to and following a morally-bankrupt government.

We deserve neither safety nor security!!!

Dude, *I* voted Libertarian. As to individual taxes, yeah I think they are unconstitutional, but a govt HAS to have some income to run. I'm not prepared to take on that battle personally, and, like it or not, we all must pay. When someone gives a cash discount it's to avoid having to declare the income. That means that you and I wind up paying more while these cheaters, liars and perjurors (you do know that signing a false return is perjury don't you?) wind up paying less. To me, that's criminal.

While I would rather see no personal income tax (a flat sales tax would do nicely) the fact remains that this is the system we have and it's the system we must abide by.
