Congressional hearing on y2k in Sacramento on Friday

I have received two phone calls from our state ag organization in the past week on y2k. Apparently, there is a Congressional field hearing in Sacramento this Friday that is supposed to have panelists on agricultural readiness. (I believe it is Horn's committee.)

Our state organization has mentioned the topic once to its members, referring them to USDA and Canadian websites. The National organization has done three whopping articles, with the last treating the topic in a light, almost flippant vein. We are not a small organization.

Apparently, I was looked to as an "expert" resource because I maintain an ag-oriented y2k website and have been nagging them for so long to get involved.

Both state staff members who called me assumed we were state leaders in remediation. They wanted me to testify, so you know how bad it is. [Actually, leaders of my local organization believe y2k to be a hoax - nothing serious enough to inform members about. By informal agreement, I cannot speak on the subject in the press or at public meetings, but my website is tolerated.]

Anyway, these guys want to know where all the California y2k ag websites are. [There are none that I know of. In fact, there are only a few nationally of which I am aware, and the best is Canadian.] They are catching on that no-one has done much of anything in the way of remediation in US ag, let alone California ag. The fact that they called me twice, may indicate they are panicing

If anyone does get to these hearings, I would be interested in who they do get to testify from ag and what is said. I betcha they spin it that everything is hunky dorey in ag land.

Marsha, thanks for the heads up. Specifics - where, when, & can the public attend? I might be able to make it to Sac, & would like to attend.

The URL of the webpage is: http://www.snowcrest.net/siskfarm/millenm.html It is basically only a page of links.

Mitchell, I will find out and let you know. Apparently Congressman Occi (sp?) is the one they are working with.

Mitchell - It is Congressman Doug Ose http://www.house.gov/ose/ and the Government Management Info & Technology Sub-Committee of the House Committee on Government Reform. http://www.house.gov/reform/

There are two field hearings, one on Friday the 13th in Sacramento and one on Saturday the 14th in San Jose. Both begin at 9 a.m. and will last for about 2 hours.

The one in Sacramento will be at the Sacramento County Supervisor's Chambers and the one in San Jose will be at the San Jose City Hall.

The topic is "Oversight of the Year 2000 Technology Problem: Lessons to be Learned from State and Local Experiences"
