Moderator needed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Is anyone here from the "doomer" side who would be willing to act as moderator for my debate with Hoffmeister? See the agreed-upon rules here.

Answers

I nominate Will continue.

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.com), August 08, 1999.

I nominate Paul Milne.

-- bloodlust (gladiator@coliseum.bench), August 08, 1999.

I nominate Zoobie.

-- Butt Nugget (nubuttet@better.mousetrap), August 08, 1999.

I second the nomination for Paul Milne.

-- MilneFan (MilneFan@MilneFan.com), August 08, 1999.

Paul Milne it is.

-- a (a@a.a), August 08, 1999.

If he has the time I can think of no-one better than Paul Milne.

-- Andy (2000EOD@prodigy.net), August 08, 1999.

sounds more like you are seeking a "second" for a duel

-- anon (anon@anon.com), August 08, 1999.

I'm not sure that the participants here understand exactly what the role of the moderator is supposed to be. The only role of a moderator is to make sure that the rules are being followed, not to be an advocate for either side. The primary rule that the moderator has to enforce is the one against personal attacks, as failing to answer a point made by the other side is more or less self-defeating.

-- Steve Heller (stheller@koyote.com), August 09, 1999.

Steve, now you are beginning to understand doomer logic and the way they behave. Attack is their mode.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), August 09, 1999.

Maria, you hypocrite...the polly moderator is Paul Davis, who recently accused doomers of growing pot to finiance their preps.

-- a (a@a.a), August 09, 1999.

Paul is a good choice because he can detect BS in a nanosecond.

-- h (h@h.h), August 09, 1999.

a, I rest my case.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), August 09, 1999.

If the purpose of a moderator is simply to "control" personal attacks, wouldn't it be better to choose a person who doesn't engage in personal attacks?

Art Welling seems to have a more pessimistic view of the unfolding of Y2k, yet I've never heard him call anyone Butthead or some of the other names that roll off Mr. Milne's tongue automagically.

-- Anita (spoonera@msn.com), August 09, 1999.

Someone who sits on the fence, 4 to 6 on the y2k scale, and doesn't attack people personally would make the best moderator. Mike Taylor comes to my mind, but I'm not sure where he stands lately.

-- Chris (%$^&^@pond.com), August 09, 1999.

Paul Milne is as biased as Doomers come. To have that guy moderating a debate would like Hitler moderating Equal Opportunity Employment for the jews.

Milne is not acceptable.

-If you live within 5 miles of a 7-11 your only a couple minutes drive from a convience store.

-- (Let Milne@ Moderate his. pigs), August 09, 1999.

why in god's green earth do we need to foul these pages with a debate that no one will win.

both ya get off ur egos. no one cares except for those out to see blood.

-- Mitchell Barnes (spanda@inreach.com), August 09, 1999.

Zoobie it is!

-- Butt Nugget (nubuttet@better.mousetrap), August 09, 1999.

OK - that's it - enough - Ghengis Khan for me...

-- Andy (2000EOD@prodigy.net), August 09, 1999.

Well, Steve who will be the moderator? The pollys got one in a heart beat. What's the matter? You guys can't even do this simply task.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), August 10, 1999.

Is it a debate on the proper methods of farming pigs??

If so, then Mr Milne is the perfect choice.

Deano

-- Deano (deano@luvthebeach.com), August 10, 1999.

Somebody said: "Paul Milne is as biased as Doomers come. To have that guy moderating a debate would like Hitler moderating Equal Opportunity Employment for the jews.

Milne is not acceptable."

I will not touch the comparison to Hitler; that is Decker's turf.

Does the fact that Davis is the owner of Gary North is a Big Fat Idiot Forum make him as biased as pollys come?

If Hoffmeister can choose Paul Davis, Heller can choose Paul Milne.

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), August 10, 1999.

Old Git, sweetheart read (please re-read) Steve's response in the middle of this thread. He doesn't find Milne acceptable. Also, Hoff would have to agree to this moderator. Afterall, he conferred with Steve on Davis as the polly choice.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), August 10, 1999.

Maria, honey, I was stating my own opinion and pointing out that Paul Davis is not exactly objective.

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), August 10, 1999.

Old git, darling, I hate to say this but your opinion doesn't count. Steve, Hoff, Davis, and all pollys have already spoken. You already stated your nomination for doomer moderator and Steve has spoken on that too.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), August 10, 1999.

uh maria, darling, where did Steve say Milne was unacceptable? It wasn't on this thread...are you hearing voices again?

-- a (a@a.a), August 10, 1999.

Oh a, my little one, if only those aliens didn't extract your mind. Steve wrote, I'm not sure that the participants here understand exactly what the role of the moderator is supposed to be.

He questioned the understanding of forum participants after each had suggested your mentor. Then he went on, The primary rule that the moderator has to enforce is the one against personal attacks, as failing to answer a point made by the other side is more or less self- defeating.

So do you really think that Milne can keep from personal attacks when he makes them so frequently. I remember one thread he actually attack your goddess Diane. Called her some kind of idiot. You should have seen the doomer defense.

Now if Steve wanted Milne I would guess that his response would have been something along these lines. Great, I'll send him an e-mail asking for his support.

Further if you re-read the question of this thread Steve is asking for someone "willing to act". In my mind that means he wants one of you dimwits to volunteer. No one has. Does that tell you something about you doomers. Ready couch potatoes to watch the fireworks but not "willing to act". a, why don't you ask the aliens if you can have your intelligency back?

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), August 10, 1999.

That's twice I typed in "y" when it should have been "e", fat fingers.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), August 10, 1999.

Well, Steve, it doesn't look like you have any support from the doomers on this.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), August 10, 1999.

I nominate Hardliner.

(And Maria, why don't you and the other pollys go play on the Bonkers site while we take care of business over here. Thanks, sweetie-pie sugar darlin'.)

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.com), August 10, 1999.

Yo the king person! - I told Steve I'd do it. Hardliner's a marine flier - and you can't trust those guys - they think playing in the dirt and flying airplanes is fun!

Long as I kept the reactor running, we had plenty of hot water for coffee.

-- Robert A. Cook, PE (Kennesaw, GA) (cook.r@csaatl.com), August 10, 1999.

Sorry, Robert, I hadn't realized that the position was filled. Sounds like we have a great man for the job.

(And a little advice: When dealing with Paul Davis -- OOPS, let me re-phrase that, I wouldn't want Paul to get the wrong idea here -- when WORKING with Paul Davis, be sure and phrase things SIMPLY, so there is no room for misunderstanding.)

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.com), August 10, 1999.

Well, if Steve's monitoring, and its needed, I accept Robert as moderator.

-- Hoffmeister (hoff_meister@my-deja.com), August 10, 1999.

Okay, Robert Cook is going to be the "doomer" moderator. Now he and Paul Davis have to pick the third moderator, and we can start the debate.

-- Steve Heller (stheller@koyote.com), August 11, 1999.

Steve, I'm willing to just use the two moderators. I think we can do this without personal attacks, which really is the purpose behind the moderator, if I read things correctly.

What do you say?

-- Hoffmeister (hoff_meister@my-deja.com), August 11, 1999.

I'm going to assume that y'all are going to carry this out in another venue and post the results. I HOPE this is where y'all have come to.

Chuck

-- Chuck, a night driver (rienzoo@en.com), August 11, 1999.

The only reason for the third moderator is to break a tie between the first two on any rule violation. As long as there aren't any disagreements between the two moderators on what constitutes a rule violation and when one has occurred, there's no need for a third moderator. I suppose they could always look for a third moderator if there were such a disagreement, so we don't really have to have one yet.

Given that proviso, I'm willing to start without the third moderator. Go ahead with your presentation.

-- Steve Heller (stheller@koyote.com), August 11, 1999.

Serious question, Chuck.

Is there some reason you don't want to have the thread here?

-- Hoffmeister (hoff_meister@my-deja.com), August 11, 1999.

If Zoobie is willing to accept the responsibility he will be the third moderator. I have spoken and that settles it. If you disagree with me, I will be forced to get real ugly. Not merely homely, not unbecoming, not woof woof, not even ugly, but REAL UGLY. UGLY with a capital U. Rosanne Barr (or Arnold, or whatever her name is this week) type UGLY. I'm not kidding.
