using the toilet for a litterbox

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

Shortly after my maine coon J.D. acquired me as his owner I noticed that he will disdain the litter box for the toilet. Since I don't know his background he was a stray, and also about 6 mo. old. I was wondering if any other Maine Coons are this way?

lisa, we have a blue maine coon cat, male, about 18 months old. he also is having problems with the litter box. I don't know if it is because we have another cat (which we had before) or what his problem is. I have tried various litters, but to no avail. I am seriously thinking of having him neutered to see if this takes care of the situation. Let me know how you resolve your problem.

bonnie. when i wrote my question i neglected to include the fact that j.d. does use the human toilet! my suggestion is yes get him nuetered, and also try a very secluded spot for his box. My box for my two kitties is in a back bedroom that sees little traffic which to them is quite all right. Also and I know this sounds backward but when j.d. came in the other cat a young female named cleo was not using her box but with the arrival of the new cat she quickly began to use the box. It sounds like he wasn't taught the proper usage of a litter box. Try putting some of his messes in a clean box as a way of letting him know this is where it belongs. Also try an older cat to show him what's up. Please let me know if anything works.
