OT - Possible Ebola outbreak in Germany - update

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Update from yesterday. There is a second person that has been infected. A co-worker that traveled with this individual to the Ivory-Coast as well. They are testing 100 people (hospital personal and staff etc.) for Ebola.

They can not say with certainty that it is Ebola yet. Incubation period has appearently not been long enough. Chances to die of Ebola with western TECHNOLOGY are about 30%. Without it chances are about 90%.

Well, sorry if this is construed as concentrating on bad news. However this is in my family's back yard and therefore very important to me. Now, imagine if technology would fail at this time. *sigh*

The main transmission path for Ebola is physical contact with an infected person. People in Africa contracted it when they buried their dead. In a Western context, with good sanitation, Ebola will not spread far. The fear would be an outbreak post y2k if facilities were crippled.

Russian defectors have reported the existence of an ebola/anthrax cross that has a 95% kill rate when delivered via aerosol. Russia has never owned up to the existence of this, however, even post-Soviet.

If you remember the thread yesterday, the poster was flamed by some because the "newsmagazine" was untrustworthy: apparently not always! I mention that because that "excuse" is starting to be used for almost any story Pollys don't like: "its only Drudge", "you can't believe WND" and the like.

Heres a short story:

FEARS OF EBOLA VIRUS OUTBREAK IN EUROPE

Germany is on Ebola fever alert late tonight after a man returned from a trip to Africa bleeding through his eyes and ears.

The patient was in Africa doing research on frogs and rhesus monkeys for the University of Wuerzburg, said Greg Hartl, a spokesman for the World Health Organization in Geneva.

The German patient was being held in strict quarantine at Berlin's Charite Hosptial until officials could determine the cause of the symptoms.

The man had returned to his home in neighboring Brandenburg state Sunday from a 12-day research trip to Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Officials said on Wednesday that others on the flight from Africa weren't at risk, because the man didn't show symptoms at that time.

Forrest Covington: Not exactly. You are right that contamition spreads directly with contact with infected individuals. It takes contact with blood or other bodily secretions containing blood. However one of the effects of Ebola is massive bleeding from gut, respiratory, even eyes. So an anyone careing for the infected individual, or in other close contact is at risk.

Dr Wei: What do you mean by an "Ebola Anthrax cross". How do you combine a bacterium- Anthrax, with a Filovirus-Ebola? Do you mean they just combined them physically in the aerosol spray?
