Senate Y2K committee hearing canceled

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

According to the US Senate's Web site,
"U.S. Senators Robert F. Bennett (R-Utah), Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on the Year 2000 Technology Problem and Christopher J. Dodd D-Conn.), committee Vice-Chair, today announced that a hearing scheduled for this week to explore the readiness of gas and electric utilities has been canceled. In its place, statements from Senators and witness testimony will posted on the Y2K committee web site on Wednesday, August 4."

I'm sure the Polly's will be happy to explain that the reason they canceled the hearing is because (choose one):
They're too busy fixing the problem to spend time testifying before Congress;
They wouldn't want to panic people into making unnecessary preparations for heating, lighting, etc.;
You can't trust anything the government says anyway, so why bother having the hearing;
Or possibly all of the above.

Mr. Heller:

I would think there would be many more possibilities for this cancellation than you mentioned.

While I have your attention, however, I'm curious as to whether you will be putting a rebuttal on your website to the accusation made by Geoffrey James in the August 2 issue of Computer Marketing that you provide misinformation on Y2k. See "Out Like a Lamb" thread below if you haven't read it yet.

Curious. We know that speakers addressing an audience of one or two committee members is not unheard of, so lack of interest can't be the reason for the hearing's cancellation. However, video of written testimony does not have quite the impact of a spokesperson making a statement, even if they involve missed deadlines for "readienss." I await the contents of the witness statements with great interest.

Actually, I've already corresponded with Mr. James. stheller@koyote.com), August 03, 1999.

Actually, I've already corresponded with Mr. James. Here is the link to our discussion. Given his previous record of failing to answer any of my points, I'm not going to bother responding to his latest nonsense.

They're having emergency sessions concerning drought relief.
