filters and step up/down rings

if i have a filter that is larger than my lens do i need a step up or a step down ring? and is it better to use a filter larger or smaller than the lens (when you have the proper adapters)?

Answers

You will need a step up ring. It is always better to use a filter that is larger (or the same size) as your lens. If you go to a filter that is smaller (and that is possible to a point) you begin to risk having your image size reduced, otherwise known as vignetting. If that happens, you'll see the corners of your picture darkened to some degree.
