Clarification on Fuji verses Toshiba

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

One person in another forum was questioning why someone would buy a particular Toshiba camera, saying that it was just a 'repackaged' Fuji camera sold at a higher price.

Are the Fuji and Toshiba cameras really the same underneath? I'm interested in the Toshiba PDR-M5 when it comes out...

thanks Mike

The earlier Toshiba units, up through the PDR-M3 were apparently all but identical to Fuji models inside, if not entirely so. (Although I've heard there may have been some unspecified firmware differences.) Beginning with the PDR-M4 though, Toshiba is going their own way, using their own designs from the ground up. Thus, there isn't likely to be a Fuji camera that's the same as the 'M5. (Of course, no guarantees that Toshiba won't now license their technology back to Fuji, so who knows?)
