Inexpensive scanner for largish films/transparencies

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Hello,

(i'm asking this question for my father, I don't know all the photography stuff) My father takes photographs on pretty large film; the negatives are around 5"x7". He is looking for an inexpensive scanner (< $300) that he can use to proof his shots. Quality is not a big issue, he just wants to be able to scan the negatives and look at them on the computer to see how the colors came out (obviously could make the negative image positive w/ photoshop). Can anyone give me any suggestions on what to look for in a scanner?

For instance, will a regular flatbed scanner, like a $200 HP, be able to scan the negative with reasonable color accuracy? Thanks for your help?

The Scanmaker-6X is under $200 usually after a rebate. You can then add an $80 transparency lid available from Microtex to scan slides and negatives up to I believe 5x7. I have the X6 but not the lid. The scanner is good but slow but for the price a good scanner.
