This is more of an educated guess then official knmowledge. I just received my first digital camera. The manual required the media be formatted before any pictures could be taken. I can only assume that it needs to be formatted much like a floppy or any other digital recording media needs to be formatted.

Just my $.02 worth

You do a cardformat when you want to reuse your CF card. For instance, I have a 48MB CF card that I used to take more than 100 shots. I copied all of these shots to my hard drive using a USB photo reader. After than, I put back my CF card in my camera and select the "cardformat" in the menu. All images get deleted and am now ready to shoot again. Basically, you have an unlimited supply of film with this process.
