Central America or South America. We will all be interested in hearing about y2k in your country. We look forward to hearing from you.

OK guys...for you that know the language, don't hesitate to step in. Its been years and years since I was fluent. Taz

-- a (a@a.a), July 24, 1999.

Taz- I'm familiar with the language and also sometimes use the online Alta Vista translator. This is basically what Jose said...

"Hello, friends. We are looking for [those][who] can [tell us] [citizens] of central America and South [America] [about] the problem " y2k ". I hope that the people of this forum are going to receive with [friendliness] the people of the world that speaks [spanish].

Taz- You offered him a very polite and friendly "welcome". On the other hand, "a" basically called him a troll...

"It seems troll have discovered babelfish.altavista.com...

Hola Jose!

And for our English speaking friends:

Latin America scrambles to avoid Y2K failures

UNCERTAIN their radars' Year 2000 computer problems will be solved, air traffic controllers in this Andean nation are taking refresher courses in guiding planes the old-fashioned way - with radioed position reports and paper charts.

Federal bookkeepers, meanwhile, may have to switch to paper ledgers until their computers are fixed.

With a handful of exceptions led by Mexico and Chile, Latin American governments were late in grasping the severity of the ``millennium bug.'' They now realise they lack the time, money and programmers to forestall potentially crippling public sector failures when 2000 arrives.

In the United States, where tens of billions of dollars have been spent on ridding computers and other electronic equipment of the date- sensitive glitch, failures are expected to cause disruptions akin to a bad snowstorm.

``For us it could be like a volcanic eruption,'' said Hernando Carvalho, a Colombian civil engineer and lawmaker who began surveying government readiness in December and found it woefully lacking.

Among Latin politicians, Carvalho is a lonely voice trying to raise consciousness where little exists.

World Bank experts and independent analysts say Latin and Caribbean governments can now do little more than focus on preventing disasters brought on by the Y2K problem, a legacy of the days when software writers saved space by expressing years with two digits. That means an unfixed computer won't be able to tell 2000 from 1900 and might shut down in confusion.

Like most governments in the developing world, they're feverishly working on plans for skirting unreliable computer systems to ensure the delivery of essential services like water, electricity and public payrolls.

``Basically everybody's in the same boat. They're only focusing on critical systems and contingency plans,'' said Rafael Hernandez, an information specialist with the World Bank.

Nearly all Latin governments rely heavily on informatics. And at precisely the moment last year that they should have been investing heavily in Y2K fixes, the Asian financial crisis hit their economies hard. - AP

If our tro.., er, Latino friend would like info translated to Spanish, let him set the babelfish loose on the archive, or any of the other y2k sites.

If we get too many multinationals in here speaking in tongues we're gonna make Andy nervous, :)

-- a (a@a.a), July 24, 1999.

This is America and the offical language is English. If you wish to participate on this forum please write in English. Many here will be willing to help you. Thank you.

Hilarious "a"!

-- CD (not@here.com), July 24, 1999.

a's been reading too many John Le Carre novels. He's nervous already.

Where is one good reason to assume that someone posting in Spanish is a troll?

This sort of spastic reaction is what we've learned to expect from the genuine trolls. Maybe we ought to consider that.

BTW babelfish is a poor translator.

Good gawd, what the hell is this GIBBERISH???!!!!!

NOTE to forum moderator: If it ain't in American, it needs to go into the DELETE bucket. People who feel like "going native" can do it in their own damn country!!!!

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.com), July 24, 1999.

Wow, I personally did not find it offensive at all that someone tried to post in their native language. I agree that this board should be kept in a english only forum but to be downright rude to him is UNACCEPTABLE.... Especially you King of Spain. Having a nick like that and then... such a b.s. answer...

Could be that I am just tired and cranky now... but remember this is NOT america. This is the INTERNET. So, be nice... Quit ACTING like the UGLY american....

But that is only the opinion of a citizen of Germany... So ignore me...

-- STFrancis (STFrancis@heaven.com), July 25, 1999.

I beg your pardon? When you go to China, you speak Chinese, when you go to Mexico, you speak their language, get it? King of Spain was right on! Speak and write english in America or go home!

-- plainlyspeaking (plainlyspeaking@jargon.com), July 25, 1999.

plainspeaking,

I agree with you to the point that if you are in a CERTAIN country you should speak their language. I agree to the point that this forum should be kept in english.

However, this happens to be the internet. It's a global thing ya know... Y2k does not discrimenate. It will hit the entire PLANET. And the more people that prepare the better we ALL come out of this... TOGETHER... And to be just downright RUDE just furthers the notion of the UGLY american. I am TIRED of hearing about him...

The guy was simply asking for help... For information... like all of us...

Let's all of us act just a little saintly

(And I'm very rusty).

Hola y buena suerte.

While I can't offer any advice here, I sure don't have a problem with those that can. Come of folks, lighten up. If you can't read it, don't read it! <:)=

I went to Mexico by myself for two weeks, not speaking a word of the language except gracias, and people were extremely kind everywhere I went. I traveled by bus, by the way. And, plainlyspeaking, you will find many Brits who swallow astonishment when Americans say, as they do frequently, "You sure do talk funny," and refer to their language as English. Incredibly, I was asked by a North Carolinian what language we speak in England.

This person, if genuine, is asking for information about Y2K. To deny him possibly life-saving information because he doesn't speak English is, well, unspeakable.

america is not exclusivly dirty americans.but it is the ass holes that are most noticeable. T.V.,cheetos,and the worlds most sucessful propaganda system have made us americans into dogma spouting fat- assed arrogant who believe that the usa is the best place in the world to live because thier surrogate parents(television)has always told them so.They actualy believe they live in a democracy. If you try to suggest that america could be better or freedom better protected, you'll get "love it or leave it"crap.Americans so desperatly want to think of themselves and their country in the fairy tale story book manner in which they where so completly brain washed.Home of the free indeed.
