Blocky images when going to converting to webpage

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have an MX600 Fuji camera I just purchased. When I put my first images on a webpage and edited the size smaller my images got blocky especially in the lighter parts of the image. I did not use Photo Deluxe to edit the images, but went from Fuji's import program to MS Frontpage 2000. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

When you say "blocky in the lighter areas", I'm assuming you mean blocks spread across what should be areas of fairly flat tone. If that's the case, JPEG compression is probably the culprit. The more you tell a program to compress the image, the more you'll see artifacts like this. I'm not familiar with Front Page, but whenever you compress an image more than about 10:1, you'll start seeing this sort of thing, and by the time you get to 20 or 30:1, it'll be quite evident. - It's just a tradeoff between smaller size and more-evident artifacts.
