Will my cat get thicker and heavier

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

I am in the process of purchasing a Maine Coon Girl. She was originally purchased to Produce many beautiful babies. But was discovered was not getting pregnant. So, the owner has had her spayed and is now selling her as a pet. She said that she is about 12 lbs now and appears to be abit thin, cause Queens are usually kinda thin. My question is, will she eventually thicken up, and not appear to be a typical Breeding Mother?

Although I don't know the animal so cannot be absolutely sure about its condition, I think the breeder is quite correct in not worrying too much about the cat being thinner and smaller than you might expect. Whole males and whole females do not gain the size that altered males or females do. Once she has been spayed and settles down to a life without being on heat all the time, I think you will see her gain some size and weight.

You did not say how old the cat is now? MCs can take up to 5 years to reach maturity. Take that into consideration, therefore, before you get the cat. One thing you could consider.....ask the breeder if she will let you take the cat to your own vet for a check up and opinion regarding her health. If the breeder is reluctant to do that (you may have to leave a financial bond or something behind you so the breeder doesn't think you are running away with the cat....or you could take the breeder with you), then I would be concerned about getting the cat from her. Any good breeder would understand your concern and appreciate your interest in the cat's health and welfare. It will cost you a few dollars for the check-up but could save you hundreds in the future, let alone the heartache if something is wrong with the cat. You wouldn't buy a used car without having someone with knowledge take a look at it (and that would cost you money!) and a car doesn't last as long or mean as much to you as a cat does!

Good luck....hope you can make a good home for the little lady.
