Hollywood Y2K movie--anyone know when it's due out?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Anyone know the status of the Y2K movie that is supposedly being produced by Hollywood as we speak (or as we type, actually)? Is there only one movie or are there several? Who's in it and when will it debut?

There are two that I know of. One is "End of Days" starring Ahhhhnold. The other one I'm not sure of the title. Both are due out in time for Christmas.

I saw a preview at the last movie I went to. the date stuck in my head (Comming Spring 2000) I think it was pushed back due to possible panic problems. I'm sure last year when I saw the same preview it said (comming summer 1999). If I owned a movie like this, I would hold off too. If it did spark a panic, they would want someone's head. Rember what happened to Orson Wells?

End Of Days has nothing to do with Y2K, I don't believe. It's a religious theme tied in with Christian millenialism, which has nothing whatsoever to do with Y2K. I understood some months ago that there was an adventure movie that takes place in January, 2000, during a Y2K social collapse. That's the one I'm asking about.

That's the SECOND one I was talking about. Forgot the name. Due out before Christmas.

Cody and Dennis,

I spent a couple of hours researching this recently, and as near as I can tell, there will be no "Y2k" Movie. There were, at one time, plans for such a film. As I understand it (don't know if this is true or not) the film was a project that was "officially" killed because of production delays.

'Closest thing to it is a movie that I believe stars Morgan Freeman. As I recall, it's a "buddy" picture that has to do with a cop and gangster teaming up to protect the neighborhood in the midst of civil unrest, etc.

The exact name of the movie escapes me (I'm sure we'll all have it memorized before January) but I think it's titled "Welcome to the Century."

Of course, I always reserve the right to be wrong. . .

:)

Most movies get killed in the initial stages of production. The problem I think with a Y2K movie is that the movie would have had to been made in a very short period of time.

If they had started in late 1998, that would have left virtually no time for special effects production and scripting. A movie can take anywhere from 2 up to 3 years to produce from beginning to end. A Y2K movie in a adventure sense would take almost a year I think to just do the special effects alone.

I don't know if this is still planned to be released, but here's a link:

It mentions Peter de Jager as a consultant.

There is more than one movie related to Y2k.

One of them is titled "Y2K". There is a rumor that next week this particular one will be announced to be released straight to video (no theaters).

This may be the one to be released straight to video:

I don't know how to do italics/quotes, etc. here. But Pat wrote above:

If they had started ... would have left virtually no time .

Kind of sums up the essence of the y2k problem. So is that art imitating life or life imitating art?
