disappointing flash pix on my A50

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am getting poor results using the flash in low lihgt situations. My images are very dark and require increasing the brightness by +25 in Thumbs+. After reading the comprehensive review of the A50 and how the reviewers lauded the low light capability I am wondering if my unit could be defective? Or what others are experiencing with this camera in low light situations? I compared the flash shots with flash shots from an Olympus 220L and the Olympus did great while the A50 was poor. thanks

It is time to change your camera. Sorry.

As Allen pointed out, we haven't been doing much toward quantifying low-light *flash* performance, have mainly just tested low-light ambient, and given the cams a pretty unchallenging flash test. Thanks to his (painful) experience, we're now starting to check mfrs claims of maximum flash distance. The A50 does indeed appear a bit weak on the flash performance. - We don't have a good way of quantifying this, but will be routinely taking flash shots at the maximum rated distance from here on in, so people can see qualitatively how the various camer

I've also noticed that the flash on the A50 is a bit weak.

When taking pictures that are within "reach" of the flash I get good results, but the flash will not reach very far.

I'm considering building a slave flash that has the capability to trigger on the second flash from the A50. This can help a lot, I think. It may be that the light measurement system on the A50 will be fooled by this since it measures light on the first flash, but that remains to be seen.
