Possible illegal recording in sfzch?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

I noticed that WBML put up a decent recording in Street Fighter Zero. Not a bad score, but read the description, he said he used Akuma...he's a hidden character! Shouldn't that be illegal in MARP, the usage of hidden characters? (I've used cheats myself, but I only did it in Neo Cup '98 to activate a name cheat that doesn't alter gameplay) If it's not, then expect a couple Bison...er...Vega recordings in Street Fighter Zero soon. I don't mean to get you in trouble, WBML, but I knew your recording was suspicious when you mentioned Akuma...he's not usually an available character, sure he might be available in the random character option, but he's not an active character usually.

I have no problem with it. I mean, how many Bubble Bobble recording don't use the power-up codes? Actually Vega (M.Bison) is the last battle for some of the characters (eg: Chun-Li) Once I even fought Vega in the first battle when he burst in unannounced (and unwanted) and had Ryu and Ken vs. Vega with Ken CPU controlled! There may be similar possibilities for the Dan and Gouki (Akuma). Like in Super SF2 Turbo, where if you don't lose a round, you fight Akuma instead of M.Bison.

Basically, you should be able to do anything you normally would on the arcade. Yes, I know sfzch is not the arcade version, but it will more than do until CPS2 emulation comes our way...

Hmmmm, are deliberate "power-up" codes such as Bubble Bobble significantly different to non-deliberate power-ups such as stopping the bugs firing in Galaga? :-p

I suppose they are since they were deliberately programmed rather than accidental features.

Anything the normal arcade would do, huh? Then how about doing the galaga no enemy shoot trick, or the gng shoot the zombies untill you have millions of points; allowing hidden characters in fighting games seems like a to be voted banned or not-banned technique...?

Hey Pat, can we do the galaga no enemy shoot trick for the tourney??? It doesn't involve a hard coded cheat, just a knowledge of which things to hit and which to avoid in the first level :)

Since we seem intent on grouping recordings for different characters together, and disallowing extra codes, I don't think it's a legal recording under the current rules. The hidden characters usually aren't balanced and give a substantial advantage over the standard characters.

On the other hand, if we decide to change things so that characters are tracked seperately (ideal, but it'd play hell with the leaderboard) or an exception for games with multiple characters (to allow all characters, even if a code is needed) I'd go along.

Personally, I hate the idiot that put Akuma the fireballing demon in the damn game but what do you expect from a wrestling fan :)

Everyone out of the corner now... Personally, I never use bubble bobble or other cheats, due to the reason that I do not know them... ;-) Here would be my question, if Akuma is a decently better character than the characters normally able to have, then it should be disallowed. Like I don't think we will start allowing power up codes on NBA Jam and the like...
