Nikon 950 always turn on in tele mode?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I just purchased the camera and as expected found the pictures taken with it quite satisfactory. Yet, I found one feature annoying and contributing unnecessarily shorter battery life and delay in picture taking. I'm used to whipping out my Nikon 28Ti and taking a picture right away with the wide angle lens. I find with the 950, it always turns on in the tele mode. I would then have to zoom to the wide where I do most of my picture taking. Even after I leave it in the wide mode, after the camera shuts itself down, the next time I press the shutter button it's in the tele mode again. Is there a way to have the camera turn on in the wide mode?

This has been a frequent complaint. Supposedly the new V1.1 firmware takes care of the problem. See Nikon's site for a download (Mac only right now, Windows very soon). Make sure you have either fresh batteries or an AC adapter when doing it though, as it takes ~5 minutes, and any power glitch will leave you with an expensive doorstop.
