I'm curious how HL&P can claim to be Y2K Ready when the two nuclear power plants they operate in Texas were named yesterday by the NRC as not ready.

Re: TXU being "ready". If you go to their y2k web page and read, really read, all their info, then you can make up your own mind.Yes, their press release and their opening page sound very good. But when you get into the details of how many plants have been tested, it doesn't look so pretty anymore.
I really, really hope they're ready, because I truly enjoy my electric life. If they're not, I'm ready.

DogGone, were you referring to Texas Utilities instead?If so, and for Mommacares as well, their webpage states over 20,000 MW of generation have been tested and verified, a 60% pad above normal usage.
As of May, they had tested 47 of 53 plants.

When I saw that you had posted this, Hoffmeister, I had this stunningingly realistic image of a youngster at the beach who had spent hours and hours painstakingly building a beautiful, intricate (but ultimately useless) sand castle. It's really kind of sad to see such effort washed away by the tide of reality.

HoffHL&P is part of a consortium that operates the two South Texas nukes in Bay City,TX, and it provides a significant part of the power to the Gulf Coast. Although assurances have been made that the ability to scram the reactors will not be affected by Y2K, there are still some systems that require remediation. I don't think it's fair to declare that you're Y2K Ready unless you really are. Since those nuclear plants will be within 20 miles of my location, I have a significant interest in knowing that all their systems are functional.

What about the careful scripting of the April "drill"?
What about the former NERC director's statement?
What about the one from the former NRC inspector?
What about Rep. Grindley's 3 week figure?
What about major utilities saying that over 50% of the compliance claims of its vendors turned out to be bogus?
What about DC's locomotive sized generators?
I could go on, but you get the point. I'm not saying that the grid is necessarily screwed, only that there is a good deal of spin here, and most of it seems to be on the polly side.

I take it with a grain of salt. Nothing specific in the quote, just a general statement.

Like I said at the time, I think NERC was too concerned with PR. The "scripting", as it were, was really nothing more than testing what was fixed, and testing a very specific set of circumstances.

I take this with a LARGER grain of salt. I believe UCS is using Y2k to promote its agenda for renewable energy. Believe me, not against renewable energy. But the UCS presentation again strung together a hypothetical series of "if"s.
I know this is anti-TB2000 think, but I really don't think NRC or anyone else wants a Nuclear Reactor meltdown, and if that is a possibility at a plant, that they (NRC) will issue a shutdown.
What about Rep. Grindley's 3 week figure?
If I followed the current status, it now appears this is second-hand information that Grindley didn't hear himself, but was relayed by the CIO of Georgia, and wasn't stated by John Koskinen, but "someone else" on the call. Starting to sound like that kid's game of "secrets".
