Digital cameras for classified areas

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Hi, Digital cameras are a GREAT device for engineers working in industrial plants. The only problem is that a lot of plants are "classified" for intrinsic safe, or explosion proof equipment due to potentially explosive atmospheres. In order to use standard cameras in classified areas we have to fill out paperwork & get someone with a "sniffer" to verify the area is non explosive. This is a real time sink when you just want to go grab some quick pictures.

My question is: Do you know of any digital cameras that are rated for classified areas? ...do you know of any manufacturers that make such devices? ...do you know if there are enclosures (like underwater cameras) available for digital cameras? (air tight)

People in industry would be willing to buy lots of equipment & pay big bucks for something to address this need.

Thank you very much for any help/direction you could give me.

Put your camera in an UNDERWATER enclosure/adapter. Made for MOST digicams.

Just make sure you seal that thing right or the body count could be really high.

Don't know when/if they'll ever make it into this country, but Ricoh has announced a waterproof camera in Japan (1.03 megapixel, I think) that can even be washed to clean it! - This might imply that the electronics are sufficiently encased so as to not trigger explosions...
