Nations bank short on cash for 4th holiday?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Last week went to pick up my gold/silver coin from a large coin exchange in my area. Owner said that the branch manager of his local Nationsbank office called him that morning hoping that they could make a large cash deposit before the weekend. Why? Because they didn't have enough cash on hand to cover withdrawls for the holiday weekend!!!!!!

SCARY...VERY SCARY!

Guess I'd better help out by buying some more gold and silver.

Can you give us an idea of the general area you are in, or your city?

Would be interesting for you (or someone in the area with a Nation's bank account) to try early Tues. morning to get some cash and see if they can overhear any scuttlebutt.

NationsBank is now (as of July 1, 1999) a subsidiary of one of the largest banks in the Western Hemisphere---BankAmerica. Since the above incident took place just about the same time frame, I would be tempted to blame it on the merger/switchover. However, it does illustrate just how fragile our 'cash flow' is on a daily basis. I wonder if the manager in question was afraid to admit to his new bosses that he had made a error in judging the amout of cash needed at his branch. The cash orders are usually made 5-7 days in advance and believe me, the central bank does not like 'special orders'.

One of the things I've noticed lately....I use ATM's alot. I usually get $200-$300 at a time. Over the past several months I've gone to get money and gotten ALL 5's.

This has never happened to me in over 20 years of using ATM's. One time the stack of bills was so large that the machine could not dispense it and some got stuck in the machine.

I mentioned this to friends at work and several also said the same had happened to them (the all 5's). This is in Midtown Atlanta and is at a large regional bank.

I find this to be quite curious.
