Bush Has Right Message in Silicon Valley

snippet:

PALO ALTO--There were blue "W"2K buttons on the tables, polished cowboy boots on a smattering of feet and a whole lot of new money flowing from the technology-based New Economy into the bulging war chest of Texas Gov. George W. Bush. ...

"We're very busy," said venture capitalist E. Floyd Kvamme, who brought about 500 Silicon Valley entrepreneurs to a crowded ballroom Thursday morning to hear Bush. "There are 67 bills before the House and Senate regulating the Internet. . . . Having to negotiate bill by bill by bill, why does it have to have so much discussion? Can't we just do what we agree on and move forward?"

On this morning, Bush did not disappoint them. Tort reform to unshackle innovation? Sure. Free trade? Bring it on. Legislation to decrease the liability of the computer industry in the face of Year 2000 lawsuits? Heck, he's already signed one like that back home. "In Texas, we were one of the first states to protect the technology industry from Y2K litigation, the biggest potential ambulance chase in the millennium," Bush told the receptive crowd after noting that this was not his first trip to the Silicon Valley but it was his first "as the president of the United States--well, soon-to-be president of the United States."

Individuals in Silicon Valley poured $850,000 into Bush's coffers out of $1.7 million raised between a Wednesday night dinner in San Francisco and the Thursday quiche-and-computer extravaganza. All told, the three-day California trip that ended Thursday afternoon in Fresno brought the campaign "$5 million and counting," according to Bush's staff. ...more...

Probably totally unrelated.... just a coincidence... pay no attention.

Bush discloses personal finances

snippet:

AUSTIN, Texas, July 3 (UPI) A financial statement filed by Texas Gov. George W. Bush reveals he purchased millions of dollars in U.S. Treasury notes last year as he geared up for his presidential election bid.

(This guy has money pouring into his political coffers faster than he can count it, so why is he suddenly getting so liquid? I'm sure that it is totally unrelated to his knowledge of Y2K - demonstrated by Texas being in the forefront of Y2K legislation. "In Texas, we were one of the first states to protect the technology industry from Y2K litigation." ... pay no attention... just a coincidence...)

The Dallas Morning News today reports Bush bought somewhere between $7 million and $14 million in notes after selling large chunks of his stock portfolio.

Bush also collected a $106,250 advance on an authorized political biography.

The filing shows Bush made as much as $2 million more on the sale of the Texas Rangers baseball team than was originally reported.

His former partner, Tom Schieffer, said last year that Bush earned $14.9 million on the sale of the team in which he originally invested $606,000.

It showed that Bush sold about $1 million in stock in Fort Worth- based Crescent Real Estate Equities and gained between $500,000 and $1 million in the sale.

Bush also earned up to $1 million by selling stock from Advance Paradigm of Irving, Texas. He also earned between $50,000 and $100,000 from the sale of investments in oil and gas.

His two money market accounts are valued at $600,000 and $1.25 million, and he reports up to $45,000 in checking.

According to the filing, his U.S. Treasury notes alone earned another $351,000 and $1.2 million last year.

(better get your gold and silver before he does)

That's just what I've done with my, uh-hem, smomewhat smaller, cache. I wonder if I should run for president. I would really BS people a lot less. Could anyone go for that? On the other hand, why the hell would anyone want to be president during a depression?

He's also engineering a private lake to stock large-mouth bass in....

I agree that his assets demonstrate his GIness.

Mara: "On the other hand, why the hell would anyone want to be president during a depression?"

But Mara... that's a perfect time for a power-grab and money grab. Fortunes to be made (or enlarged)... long as you got out before the crash.

And Dan.. (totally OT).. but I don't think it matters a hill o' beans (and we all have plenty of those don't we) whether Gore or Bush gets the nod... either one would sell the soul of Uncle Sam to the highest bidder. Crazy as it sounds, I would vote for Jesse in a heartbeat. [For the "My President can beat up your president" T-shirt if nothing else]. At least he seems to speak his mind without checking the daily polls first.

And while we're pretty much OT... here's an interesting article on GWB
