Did The Dead Walk?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

When the death of Christ took place it is told us the spirits of the dead walked the streets of the city among ruins caused by a form of earthquake. What does this signify to us as Chrsitians?

Well the SIMPLE explanation of this is it was a sign of God to those who saw them. The same thing for us,a sign to believe.

It's Matthew 27:51-53 and it does not say spirits it says their bodies arose and came into the city. The resurection of the body at the end of time.

My question here is, who were these "holy people" they came back to life? how long did they stay in Jerusalem after the resurrection? what ultimately happened to them?

I have a theory that they were the faithful from the Old Covenant. Matthew 27 says that they appeared to many in Jesrualem after the resurrection. They must have been familiar figures to those living at the time in order to be a "sign". So they were either deceased relatives/friends OR known figures from Jewish culture. Since the scripture identifies them as "holy people", I assume that my second possibility is the right one. So who were they? Abraham? Noah? Isaac? Gideon? Deborah? Makes me wonder.

Did Jesus bring them with him when he returned from paradise having proclaimed the gospel to those who were there? And did Jesus lead them into heaven upon his ascension? Doesn't the scripture say that Jesus led a train of those who were held in captivity into heaven?

I love this often overlooked event. It fascinates me. Thanks for bringing it up Jean.

David,

Might I recommend you pose this question to the Scripture scholar who does Q&A on the Eternal Word Television Network website. Try http://www.ewtn.com, select the FAITH drop down menu, select Q&A, and select Scripture forum from there.

To The Group,

Now we are cooking! Imagine a religion that has mysticism spiritualism prophets walking dead voices in the night. Can anyone add to these spectacular elements. Makes " night if the living dead "child's play.

The above in part was what the apostles presented. No wonder they upset people and excited them also.
