Cam with best Color Saturation?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

(Sorry for my 2nd posting of the same question. I incorrectly put my last name in the subject line previously.)

I'm looking for a cam with the best Color Saturation. I just got the new Canon A50 and am pleased with it, however, I still want better color saturation (more lively colors). Adding color saturation to compressed images is not satisfactory, because the jpeg compression areas tend to become noticable after adding color saturation, plus it's a step I'd rather not have to do. Is there a cam that produces pics with great colors that are fun to look at right out of the cam under the $900 range? The Canon A50 seems to mute the colors on outdoor shots and is hot (white) in the bright areas and therefore looses the detail there. Indoor shots are great I must say! I'm thinking about the Coolpix 950 but not sure if the saturation (color vividness) is any better. I can see that the A50 produces much brighter yellows than the CP950. I sure like the size of the A50 and the lens cover. Always tradeoffs! I'd really appreciate any opinions on a cam with great colors (mainly in outdoor shots). Thanks in advance! Mark

I am wondering how the color saturation looks when you print your photos? I have an Epson 750Z. Occasionally I thought some of my indoor shots needed more saturation. After I would edit them and then print them I would realize I should have left them alone. Straight from the camera printed better than my edited version. Another thing to watch is, if you do edit you picture save it to a TIFF or some other none compressed format. Resaving to JPEG will cause additional compression and become more noticable.

You are absolutely right! I hadn't printed a pic yet until now, and the colors are satisfactory (perfect i think)! Most of my pics are for on-screen viewing and web posting. i've been scanning photos up to now with Microtek scanners and I've been used to getting bright vivid colors from my scans. Thanks for pointing that out. There is quite a difference between my notebook tft display and the printed output from an HP890 inkjet. The printed output is wonderful. The notebook is "duller" in colors. I know about the compression too. Thanks!
