a reminder: USE DEFAULT SETTINGS!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

I don't want to name names... aw hell, I will. It was nice to see Game Guru finish Wardner, as I still haven't been able to beat the last boss. But one thing caught my attention at the beginning of the game: he started with 5 lives! (the default value is 3)

While I still haven't been able to finish Wardner or Pyros on one credit, it'll be even harder to top that score on default settings. Why? Because you get a bonus for every remaining life (I think it's something like 50,000). So having those extra two lives can make a huge difference.

I thought it was agreed upon that default settings would be used for all games, except TG settings (if noted). I don't think any TG settings exist for Wardner/Pyros, and I'm willing to wager that it wouldn't include 5 lives. If there are no restrictions on what settings can be used, why not use a cheat for infinite lives?

While I agree on using default setting for compatibility reasons, I have to say though, what about the people who want to change the difficulty settings for a challenge.

if the settings are harder, there are no objections. but if you change the settings to make them easier that is the issue, since you'd be competing at an easier level than the rest and thus does not have a place. me speak english well... heh

What about "compensatory adjustments"? For example, in Money Puzzle Exchanger (or Super Puzzle Fighter 2), increasing the difficulty a lot, but then changing from a single-game format to a best-of-5? Is there any official opinion here yet?
