can't use Fuji MX-2700 with 32Mb SmartMedia??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have just got my MX-2700 (my 1st digital camera) and love it. But having some difficulty getting the 32Mb SmartMedia (Olympus M-32PE) to work with it. The camera responded a "Card error" when trying to format the SmartMedia card. Any idea or hints?

Hmm, it could be several things here. I got my 2700 only three days ago so I'm no expert on this model.

Try cleaning the gold contacts of the SM card in case some "stuff" is preventing contact. Reseat it into the camera with a firm push. I ordered a 16mb card that I thought was defective since it gave the same error code when inserted. I tried a few things but didn't work until I got a bit bolder while inserting it... giving it a firm push.

Your card may have arrived already formatted for a device other than the 2700. Perhaps it was formatted for an Olympus camera, a format that may not be recognized by the Fuji. The SmartMedia card is used in several digital cameras and even the DiamondMedia Rio MP3 music player. Almost every manufacturer uses a different formatting structure on the card which is likely incompatible with another.

I'd first try to return the card to the place you purchased it for another. If not possible and you'r stuck with a completely useless card, you might try re-formatting it with a free software program meant to format SmartMedia cards originally formatted for the Rio so they work in digital cameras again. Check out and scroll down to the "Dreaming of Brazil" program.

This would be classified as "hacking" your card and only the last resort. I have no experience here and cannot claim any responsability for results, negative or positive. The best idea is still to exchange what may be a defective card for a new one.
