Canon Proshot70 or nikon coolpix 950. Press work

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I need very quality images for printing in Press and magazines. I have my scanner but I need a quick digital camera with the best quality and less than 1500$. I saw all your articles but I need the last advertising to choose one of these. Ah!!!, is coming a new canon with 2.1 or more megapixel?

Among these two, the Canon PowerShot Pro 70 would be my choice. I do have one and it is a great product. It has plenty of manual control in addition to Auto mode, it is one of the best units for indoor photos (remote Flash helps a lot). And also it is the "only" digital camera at this time, that can use the IBM Macrodrive (340MB) CFII type module (hard drive) in addition to type I CF modules. This is a professional level DigiCam. Canon D-2000 has more tha 2MP (it has been on the mmarket long before other 2MP Digicams hit the market) and last I checked it was priced at $13,400 US. So the Canon Pro 70 is a great buy for what it can offer.

The 950 has a lot of power, but accessing it is a very fiddly procedure. If you are shooting for the press, you need the controls to be intuitive and immediately at hand. With the 950, you are punching tiny buttons, spinning dials, scrutinizing a LCD, etc. I have two of these cameras, and although they are built well, the controls are frustrating. I have no experience with the canon, but if it is modelled after an slr, you might have better luck. You defintely should spend some time in the store with one in your hand.
