OMB Report Says Some StatesAre Behind on Key Y2K Repairs
By Stephen Barr
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, June 17, 1999; Page A33

While the federal government has mobilized to squash the Y2K bug, with spending now projected at more than $8 billion to make computer systems ready to operate in the Year 2000, about a quarter of the federal health and safety programs administered by states lag on repairs, a new report shows.

"We've got to worry about whether the states are going to get done," John A. Koskinen, chairman of President Clinton's Year 2000 council, said yesterday. "The fact that we're done with our computer systems doesn't do us a lot of good if a state can't run its share of the program."

==================

One of the most incredibly galling remarks ever blathered by ko'skin'em.

First he attempts to point the finger of blame on someone OTHER than the Federal government . And THEN, sureptitiously slips in this little gem "The fact that we're done with our computer systems .."

LOL LOL LOL

It is a 'fact' that they are DONE with their computer systems?

Perhaps today's news was incomprehensible to this asshole.

Some federal agencies still lagging in Y2K fixes

Erich Luening

With less than 200 days left until the end of the year, many agencies in the U.S. Federal Government still lag in their efforts to beat the Year 2000 technology problem and some may miss the deadline all together, according to a congressional report.

"The FAA's Air Traffic Control System is not Year 2000 compliant. Nor is the Health and Human Service Department's Payment Management System ready.

Or perhaps this lying moron missed this:

Pentagon Rates Low in Y2K Preparedness
By STEPHEN FUZESI, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON--While much of the federal government has made significant progress in preparing for the Year 2000 computer problem, many key agencies lag behind, including the Department of Defense, a House panel said Tuesday.

http://www.latimes.com/CNS_DAYS/990616/t000054033.html

But let's give this lying scumbag the benefit of the doubt, for one moment. Suppose that what he meant was ***IF*** the federal government was ready, then it would not do any good if the states were not ready. Well? Then THAT is what he should have said. Instead, he points fingers at the states and leaves the readers with the INDELIBLE impression that the Federal government is DONE. Extremely clever use of words on his part.

However, he clearly manifested that he DOES know how to properly use the word 'if' when he says 'if' the states do not get done. So, it is clear to me that he was being as disingenuous as possible.

The bottom line is that the Feds are not close to being done ( having reduced the number of mission critical systems ONCE AGAIN, now down to just over 6100 from 6400 two months ago and over 9000 originally.)  and the states are even further behind.

I  would not be surprised if they are banking the coals in a special place in hell for Koskinen.

If The Bible calls Satan the 'Father of all Lies', certainly Koskinen moonlights as  his ghostwriter.

Thanks "a", IMHO the folks responsible for the BIG LIE must be prosecuted when the time comes.

Personally, I would prefer they be tried for "crimes against humanity", and executed. (*IF*)

-- Dennis (djolson@pressenter.com), June 18, 1999.

No, none of them will recieve any payback for lying. In fact, if Koskinen decided to TELL THE TRUTH TODAY, he would personally suffer far more consequences today then by simply lying, which essentially is what he is paid to do. That, quite frankly, is his JOB -- to lie, to keep lying, to promote the "greater good". Which is to hold off the upcoming panic.

But like sewage bubbling up from the ground, the panic may not be contained very much longer...

i have to wonder how you are able to post all this drivel with your head all the way up milnes ass like that. you are one incredibly talented little moron aren't you.

b.....you're just jealous.

b: You should direct your inquires to ABC News and the LA Times, and your anger to those at the government helm.

-- a (a@a.a), June 18, 1999.

The fact that Koskinen is trying to create the impression that the Federal government is further ahead than it really is, doesn't excuse Milne's constant attempts to create the impression that they're *much* further behind than they actually are.

Koskinen and Milne are like lawyers on opposite sides of the case. They agree on procedures, that the way to win is to spin spin spin. They are opposite sides of the same coin, both so intent on presenting the "right* disinformation that the actual status is lost and irrelevant.

Does it really matter which one can do the best job of creating a wildly false impression?

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), June 18, 1999.

Oh come on everybody! So what if the Government of the United States of America *tanks*. We'll still have each other, right? Now, put on those smiley faces, wipe those tears away and let's all gather 'round for a little song to boost our spirits....come on Maria, Decker, Flint, Poole, Brock, Anita, Davis and company....get over here, don't be shy now! After all...the DOD is gonna make it, right?

-- Will continue (farming@home.com), June 18, 1999.

jealous? jealous of whom? jealous of what? that damn near borders on humorous!

milne posts some crap about koskinen should have used the word 'if' and little 'a' has to bring that drivel over here? i only ask why? what was the point of that post? it made no sense, it made no claims. it basically proves the point that the best part of milne and little 'a' ran down the inside of their mamas thigh a long, long time ago.

Flint commented:

"Does it really matter which one can do the best job of creating a wildly false impression?"

Flint, yes it does matter to me and millions of other Americans. John Ko-skin-em is a representative of the federal government. He had an opportunity to take an entirely different approach to y2k a LONG time ago. He and the rest of the SHILLS in this Administration elected to take the LOW ROAD, now the Piper is knocking on the door and the sheeple are in a coma. Truly sad!

Come on all you sqabbling adolescents. Aren't you all grown up taxpayers yet? Haven't you learned to NEVER TRUST THE KING ?!! When TSHTF I hope you all can stop yakking BS and get your butts moving for your families welfare if you've got any sense. This forum has a disproportionate share of whining ninnybabies/ elitist snobs with cultlike mentalities. The pollys and trolls are a breath of fresh air compared to the rudeness and BS of alot of the posters here.

-- Barb (awaltrip@telepath.com), June 18, 1999.

Flint: Kokinen is a lawyer. That's why the situation is particularly distressing. Also, in this "case", if Milne is right, those that listened to the liar, er lawyer, are dead. If vice versa, no sweat. I know you can't follow this simple logic, but there it is again, in black & white.

b: if you promise to behave and change your pollyanus ways, I will speak to Paul and see if he will let you be his left hand man. OK?

-- Will continue (farming@home.com), June 18, 1999.

I can understand why people who are concerned about potential damage from Y2K glitches and complications post on these forums; after all, a compromised infrastructure is not a pretty thing. I lived too near the Rodney King riots and the epicenter of the Northridge Quake to underestimate the ugly backlash of human nature when their familiar comfort zone is threatened or disrupted. I do NOT understand why people who think all will be well forever in America take the time to post snide condescending posts (or for that matter, why do some of you drop to the gutter level and respond... rather than just ignoring? Those who are ignored get bored...) If the mayor of L.A. is concerne, if Koskinen (Mr. Spin Himself) feels that by the end of summer he needs to encourage people to prepare more, if billions of dollars are being spent, etc. etc. actually the concrete evidential examples could go on and on, then why care a rat's patoot about those who laugh maniacally from La La Land? Let's just smile quietly at the "I am American... I'm Invicible's" and not clutter up these threads with inane rantings. I have seven kids and fight for time to catch up on research and current events. I'd like to hear more about either practical tips, how you are coping etc. Please!

-- Mumsie (Lotsakids@home.com), June 18, 1999.

"The fact that we're done with our computer systems doesn't do us a lot of good if a state can't run its share of the program."

done (dun), past participle of do, adj. 1. completed; ended.

Get off of it Flint. A lie is a lie....as in untrue, no ifs, ands or buts. The "FACT" as Koskinen stated above is possibly only true if he's talking about the PC at his house. But heck....lets call the media, this is BIG NEWS....we need to let them know that the Federal government computer systems are done.

Btw, what part of the word "done" do you not understand? I'd love to hear you defend this one. I've included the definition to give you a head start. Go for it Einstein!

-- Cary Mc from Tx (Caretha@compuserve.com), June 18, 1999.

Mumsie: All kidding aside (just for a moment). I really do understand where you're coming from...OK? I've been there too. I've known for a long time now, that the work had no chance of being done, tested and functioning and inneracting with everything that would be *needed* and in place. We're not just talking about America here, are we? This is a world-wide crisis with a date and specific time. There are MANY different levels of acceptance to this. I've been just worn to the bone preparing. Same with *many* of the others on this forum. We've been abused and insulted by not only our government and society in general, but by those we love the most as well. To say that I am sort of 'punchy' at this stage would be an understatement. I'm sick of crying. My work is done and I do not 'fear' for those under my roof nearly as much as I have for the past year. The facts, that all have been screaming for, are in. The arguement is over. Please let some of us have a few laughs and a little fun.....OK? It's about all that is left for some of us. We can't change the outcome or save the world. This *is* how some of us are 'coping'. I am alone on a 10 acre farm and I crave others who have "had the same dream" and people to laugh with that understand where I'm coming from. That's all. No conspiracy or mental illness. Just Americans about to have the last yuk. Scary times are around the corner....don't for one minute think that any of us aren't a little scared here. If you aren't....you're a fool and of little value to those depending on you. Good luck, my friend. Lighten up a little, everyone's about to be in *need* of some humor!

-- Will continue (farming@home.com), June 18, 1999.

Dear Will, believe it or not, I do laugh at alot of the insults and posts; however, sometimes it just takes so much time wading through the muck to get to the helpful stuff. Also, consider those of us who have not known about this as long, who have not been preparing as long. I have shed the same tears, have felt the same ostracization by friends and family, and please understand that all was not peachy in my life before "Y2K". I do understand where you are coming from, I'm just not as "prepared" as you yet, and so cannot afford the same luxury to sit back and trade insults, albeit at times, hilarious ones. We have no one to help us. We are also on our own. I am not on ten acres yet either. We thought we had a good place to lease/purchase, but turned out to have all kinds of hidden problems, and worse yet, unethical and untrustworthy landlord. The kind that would "turn you in" if things get bad. And I think they are going to get very bad. So now, I'm looking for another place to live, trying to pack and prepare. My own father quit speaking to me for quite awhile, and told some relatives that he's not going to "run and hide in the woods like some kook". All this, because I simply asked him to think about buying some extra food, maybe even (radical!) wheat, and to store water etc. He said if things get that bad, he would rather not be around. I told him that was very selfish, because his generation has alot of helpful knowledge that could be dusted off to help others survive. Out of our collective eight siblings, we are the ONLY ones preparing. Ditto for my in-laws. We can talk gut wrenching tears any day, especially when the nieces and nephews enter in the picture. I can't even get my sister to stock up on insulin. We were in the middle of dealing with a serious financial crisis when we found out about Y2K, and relocating rather suddenly hasn't helped much. I know about feeling alone. We also wish we could trust someone enough to work together, but the people we spent years learning to trust and understand, have chosen to stay in southern CA. They are betting their lives (in my opinion) that things will be a manageable bump if they stash a little food and water. We will not risk our children's lives and welfare on wishful thinking. The people we grew up around (in MN) are also not taking this very seriously. Now we are in northern Idaho, seems like a good place in many ways. I'm not trying to pick on you, but while you are trading insults with the La La Landers... please keep throwing in good tips and information. I have read alot of your postings, and think I do understand where you are coming from. Please try to remember what you felt like when you were only about 25% done preparing, and I'll try hard to laugh at the funnier flames. Sorry if this was a depressing post, I left out the mentally ill relative, dying mother, divorcing sibling, and my kid regaining trust after being betrayed by a trusted relative. But you're right about humor, at our house, we can't live without it. It's either laugh or cry, right?

-- Mumsie (Lotsakids@home.com), June 18, 1999.

My God Mumsie...we've walked in each others shoes, hon! Now listen closely. The majority of "tips" are dying down. There's just too much news to be reporting and we're all in a frenzy to proove our wacko theories have been correct! (no real surprise). Read the threads for news, but go into the archives for the majority of prep tips. We sold the boat, uneeded furniture and extra car, this hasn't been easy. Hit garage sales, Goodwill, Dollar stores. Have good books for reference, absolutely essential. Don't throw anything away, today's trash is tomarrow's treasures, you know where I'm headed. Hit the archives....it's a wealth of information. Ask questions. We'll answer them. You're in a good part of the country. This can be done. Alone isn't so bad, at least I can trust who's with me. Besides, I know God. We like each other. I'm never alone! Rent rural if possible. It works and the kids will love it. My youngest thanks me once a week and he has been "glowing" ever since we moved out here. Hang in there, we'll help! (archives, archives)

-- Will continue (farming@home.com), June 18, 1999.

Mind meld to Will...We are renting/leasing rural, ancient house, breathtaking views, 20 acres...would even try to work out the problems like leaking house and barn roof, major junk clean up, major barn repairs, ditto on fencing, plumbing problems, well is questionable. But can't seem to get past the landlord problem. It's not easy to find a rural place to lease with seven kids, four dogs, a cat, canary, four finches, four parakeets, two conures, thirteen chickens and four ducks. sigh Go figure. I think we're swell! Too bad too, hubby is electrical engineer, good work potential post Y2K when the "fixing" kicks in. Do dig into archives alot, but try to keep up with most of current postings as a barometer of what is really happening, plus the good news like Ace's Hardware getting in Aladdin lamps etc. By the way, thinking Berkely filter and Petromax lamp... any negative feedback on these? I'm so naturally undomestic it's not funny, would have thrived in a competitive dog-eat-dog career, but almost come unglued trying to get the blankety-blank pie crust to come out right. Kids from 19 years down to 11 months, so already a regular at Goodwill etc. Soon will force myself to grind and bake bread, ugh. Also,... what hand grinders are you all out there buying.. who is actually "using" their handgrinder,.. do you love it, or wish you had gotten Brand X? With nine people here, it's not exactly like I'm "alone" either, LOL, but frustrated like many of you because people I care about aren't even analyzing and evaluating the potential for trouble. (Arrggghh!! Mumsie wants to smack them with information and force them to take a look. But nooooo.... "we" don't need to read it, we don't need to "know" anything..."oh all right, we'll buy a few cans of beans and a few jugs of water and make sure we have some propane for the barbeque grill") I don't mind those who read, think and disagree,... just don't ignore it because you don't like it, right? I am not necessarily a 9 or 10'er, not because of just Y2K anyway. Believe it could get pretty bad, but because I see historically that bad people love to magnify and take advantage of a crisis. When Congressmen privatey express their concern that there may not be another presidential election in America... what number is that on a scale? Guess it depends on whether someone doesn't mind living like a mindless slave whose belly is kept reasonably full, has entertainment provided, and is not required to sacrifice too many personal comforts. It is the potential of a power hungry elitist government to strip our basic freedoms that concern me as much or more than Y2K. It never ceases to amaze me how much trust people place in total strangers called "They" or "the Government". Like the old babysitting analogy,... people leave their kids with someone they wouldn't give their car keys or credit card to,.. people trust with a schizophrenic rationale. We really are sheep. What about the many in power currently who believe we are over-populated? Maybe they think a chunk of the population dying from famine/disease/violence will be a blessing in disguise. (Oh come on, only wackos would be so cynical and suspicious...or, maybe alot of the real "wackos" are sitting in positions of power in government now. Can you spell Al G*re?? Okay,... time to soak some beans for tomorrow.

-- Mumsie (Lotsakids@home.com), June 19, 1999.

PS to Will Was finishing college degree, stopped to come here,.. daughter left college temporarily also,.. her art school of choice is in LA. Husband is transitioning out of his own business in southern CA and trying to start over, just when it was starting to get good,..replaced car, driving the "Green Hornet" (78),...also left private school we helped found, were school Board members...Two sons were offered contracts by a top agent in entertainment business, we walked away (kids used to be in community theater),.. and worst of all... left dear and beloved friends. They tolerate my trying to get them to look at information because they love me, but unfortunately, they won't really look at it. Actually, two did, and they are thinking they can prepare and ride it out there. I think the violence is going to be unbelieveable, and would not stick around with seven dependents. Hubby went to one technical conference, and moved us two months later. He does believe the power grid is vulnerable, and that Y2K may not take it down, but a terrorist could rather easily during that time. Thanks for listening Will.

-- Mumsie (Lotsakids@home.com), June 19, 1999.

Mumsie....you got it. Just make sure you keep it, sister! My oldest is 19 in October! She's getting a whole new form of education. Just keep that copy of the Declaration of Independence in your back pockets, kids. (and loose the lip gloss, honey)

At the top level of the TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) there is a link that reads About if you click there youll link to Brians Preparation Archives. Out of the massive Forum archives... difficult to access without a search engine... hes been compiling the whats important about preparation and what you "need to know" TB2K posts.

Thanks Diane. I can't hot link. I can barely type, HA! You're a trooper!

-- Will continue (farming@home.com), June 19, 1999.

Thanks for the hot link Diane! This is one of those no-turning-back deals. If things are not so bad come early 2000, then we will play it by ear. I won't mind being wrong, I'll be singing and dancing over the new options it will open. But I will say this, that I never ever want to live in an "unprepared" state of existence again. There are so many things that could happen, and who wants to start from ground zero? From now on, we want to respond, not react. Wish I had something more helpful to contribute back, but still in the bleary eyed days of little ones. I do appreciate all the researching and sharing of information that people are so good to post. bY ThEwAYwhEReIsDIeTeR?
