Why did it take so long for the DVD version to come out?

I don't think it is entirely a coincidence that Fox and Paramount waited until DIVX (DVD's evil twin) was dead to re-announce that the movie would be available on DVD.

As soon as the official announce of DIVX's demise was out this past Tuesday, the next day there was a spate of press releases and news blurbs about "Titanic" on DVD (August 31st for North America, September 1st internationally). It wasn't exactly news, but the circumstances had certainly changed.

Apparently, it takes about 9 months to make a "golden master" DVD of a motion picture, so the earliest we could have expected a release was September of 1998.

I don't know if the two events are related, but the death of this intrusive, brain-damaged format is long overdue.
