UTNE Reader Response

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MEd Cohort III : One Thread

"Breaking the Job Lock" by Andrew Kimball in the Jan-Feb 1999 UTNE READER takes many interesting twists and turns. It first starts off whining and complaining about how hard life is today and how much pressure we have. Give me a break, these complainers should have to move back to the depression or war times. The article then turns positive and gives a brief history on jobs, occupations and work. It returns to whining about "The Cult of Efficiency," we believe that we are pushed harder at work today than 20 years ago. Maybe we just want more and are pushing ourselves, I know I am.

The best part of this article is the last third. It basically tells people that life is what you make of it. Go get a job that satisfies you, a job where you as an employee are listened to and respected. Or better yet, go start your own small business. I say just do something and stop being a whining, innocent victim of todays hectic world.

Hello Richard, I have read a variety of comments from other members of your cohort who have seen many other things in this article. The article appears to also be speaking to our need to better understand the "real" economics of life. During a discussion of this article, few of us observed and focused on the concept of "vocation vs job". Have you any other thoughts? Thanks, John
