DATE AND LOCATION

The second Northern Virginia Y2K Get Together is officially scheduled for Saturday, June 19th, 1999 in Washington, Virginia from 4 pm until 8pm. This date and location was decided upon in order that people can attend the 6 hour FREE seminar by Carla Emery (author of the Encyclopedia of Country Living) at the nearby Rappahannock County Public Library. It is a long day with lots of time for us to get to know each other and exchange personal insight into the problems and the fixes of Y2K. Come at whatever time you can. I plan to get to the library about or after lunch time.

If you plan to arrive before 4:00 pm EST, we'll probably be at the Rappahannock Library. By 4:00 pm or thereafter, we should be over at the Rappahannock park (this is just down the highway on your left). Feel free to bring your spouse, significant other, family, and/or friends. It'll be great fun. Directions are at the bottom of this message.

The library phone number is (540) 675-3780. If you would like my phone number or Walt's number (host of Carla's seminar), please email me at info@giglobal.com

ACTIVITIES AND THINGS TO DO

If things work out, Carla may just join us for the get together. Sally Strackbein of www.y2kkitchen.com may demonstrate some of the best of y2k cooking. Besides cooking and eating (some Y2K dishes are in the works and other good things), we'll have a show and tell. We'll be cranking up Baygen flashlights and shortwave radios, lighting aladdin oil lamps, petromax lanterns, and colemans too, winding up my trusty morale-lifter of a TEOTWAKI music maker (an old wind up Thorens music box that plays little metal discs without electricity), and much more. There is also a river where you can get water and demonstrate your filters.

ABOUT WASHINGTON, VIRGINIA

Also nearby to this location is the Inn at Little Washington (one of the most expensive and best restaurants in the whole country), Luray Caverns (within 20 miles), and the great Shenandoah National Park (famous for fall foilage). Washington, Virginia, an historic little town nestled in the scenic countryside, is about an hour West of Washington, D.C. Along the way, you'll find a variety of family fruit and vegetable stands as well as some that do the canning for you.

LODGING AND OTHER THINGS

While the bed and breakfasts may be booked up in Washington, Virginia, there are campgrounds and motels within 20 minutes. Besides the 5 star Inn at Little Washington, there are a couple of cafes that are affordable in Washington, Virginia.

Comfort Inn - (540)349-8900 Hampton Inn - (540)349-4200 Howard Johnson Inn - (540)347-4141

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

Beyond the hoped for dish or two by Sally, some of the friendly locals (Virginians) will be gracious and provide dinner (or dinner makings) and beverages for all. I am planning on bringing a canned corn casserole and some other nice things that are planned for my own Y2K menu. Of course, I will be bringing some cigars along, but not sure what they will be. The Habanas are gone. Perhaps, new Romeo and Juliets.

DIRECTIONS TO THE RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY LIBRARY

From the BALTIMORE, MARYLAND area:

Take I-95 South to the Capital Beltway.

Take I-495 (toward Silver Spring).

Take Route 66 West to Exit 43A (Gainesville/Warrenton, Rt. 29 South)

Travel south on Rt. 29 to Warrenton. As you approach Warrenton you will see a Comfort Inn on your left. Directly opposite is an exit for Route 211/Business Route 29. Take this right exit.

Follow this road straight through Warrenton until the third stoplight at Howard Johnson's/Shoneys on your right. At this stoplight, turn right (Rt. 211 West).

After about 24 miles, you will see the library on the right. It is a white and brick building on a hill that is clearly marked.

If you see a sign instructing you to turn into Rt. 211 Business (Washington, Virginia), you have gone a few hundred yards too far.

(TO THE PARK: Keep going down Route 211 West -- past the Library. The Rappahanock Park is on the left; it should be less than a mile or so from the Library. Where the sign says turn right to Washington, Virginia, turn left to the Park.)

From RICHMOND, VIRGINIA

There are many routes you can take. For simplicity's sake, here's the route we recommend:

Take I-95 North to the Fredericksburg area.

Take Route 17 West to Warrenton.

In Warrenton take Route 211 West.

Carla Emery's seminar should be dynamite and I urge everyone to attend who is within a day's drive. Bring a friend or come and make new friends.

The seminar starts at 9:00 a.m. It is FREE and no pre-registration is required.

Carla will be presenting a ton of material and useful information. My guess is that it will last until 3:00 or so. Feel free to come and go as you please. If you can't arrive in the morning, come later. You'll be welcomed.

I suggest that you come with a notebook, a lunch and questions you want answered. Carla will be selling her books so bring a checkbook.

Feel free to call me at 540/675-3679 if you have questions.
