NERC reports through May now available

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

The reported data through May is now available on NERC's web site. As of May 31, the average utility was 100% complete with inventory, 99% complete with assessment, and 91% complete with remediation/testing.

I'm trying the link here:

Dan, my man,

Terrific news. But I'm having a little trouble here locally with my own providers. Conectiv and PSE&G. (PSE&G are the ones that had that little stumble with Peach Bottom that is now so hush hush) They also are partners in some nukes called Salem. Could you connect the NERC report with their 10Qs and let me know what the situation is? Last time I looked, Conectiv only started work on their systems in March of 1998, had about 25 million lines of code and 12 programmers. As of the end of last year they hadn't accomplished much except for their billing systems which were coming along real good. I really want to share your happy thoughts, but I need more professional information about this local utility and how good they're doing. Now I do note that in your post you refer to figures for the "average" utility. Perhaps mine is one of the non-average ones. Could you confirm this for me, please.

Hello Gordon. Unfortunately, I can't be of much help, since the individual company submittals to NERC are kept confidential. Yes, the numbers I quoted are averages. You've probably already done this, but at www.pseg.com, it states that they were 90% complete with mission critical systems by the end of 1998, so they appear to be ahead of the average. They mention finishing up a nuclear plant issue in November, so they'll definitely be reporting this to NERC as an exception (this isn't necessarily a bad thing, since many utilities will be reporting some exceptions).

At www.connectiv.com, they say that as of June 9, they are 88% complete, so they are a bit behind the average.

The good news is that you'll know in July whether any power company is "ready", or "ready with limited exceptions". An explicit list will be on NERC's web site.

I appeal to the forum moderator for more info, since he lives in the same area of the country as you do. Rick?

Dan,

You are a wizz with the broad brush. Reminds me of a barn painter I knew. So, I go to the www.conectiv.com and I get to a Y2k page eventually and I get, what? Not much. But here is what they say. They originally (last year) defined 140 systems as being used in their business, but now feel that only 21 of those are important, or mission critical. (15%) Sounds like the Fed, huh? AND of those 21 they think they are now 88% complete. Dan, is this the sort of stuff you think is happy news? Only slightly below average? Wow! You may be the Power Man but it sure doesn't look like you're the Planner Man. And anyway, how's about a look at the 10Qs where they can get in a lot of trouble for fudging the numbers around, unlike their web page or the NERC report. Dan, I sure wish you would take this stuff more seriously!

.... and 91% complete with remediation/testing.

Would you mind explaining to us exactly what you think that means?

Especially since you think it's important enough to boldface.
