MARP Tournament - Rules Voting Thread + Current Status

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

I'm going to create this thread so everyone gets the chance to vote for the rules. I made this thread because I'm surprised only one person has voted for a scoring system, and nobody has challenged my game selection proposal yet. :)

Zwaxy has been kind enough to make a tournament page on his server I believe. Thanks a million :)

We also have a suggestion from an email I got that the Judge Coordinator should not participate in playing games at all - because s/he would have the final say on qualified/disqualified recordings... this I'm going to agree with. Anyone still want to step up to this position?

Current Game Status, in order of precedence:(votes in parenthesses)

F1 Dream(2), Gyruss(2), Combat School(2), Super Punch Out!(2), Do Run Run(1), Kick Rider(1), Gradius(1), Pac Man-speedup cheat(1), City Connection(1), Klax(1), Donkey Kong 3(1), Omega Race(1), Mr Do.'s Wild Ride(1), and War of the Worlds(1).

Klax would be the 10th game.

Remember - the faster you vote, the better chance you'll have a game in the event of a tie.(unless that rule gets overridden by the players...) If there's a tie between two players and nine games are already selected, I'll admit both games in... so I will be flexible...

Thanks for reading this message. :)

Did this current status take in 2 voting points for people's #1 choice?

I vote for a % based scoring system - preferably with no bonus for 1st place. I'm sure everyone will have a favourite game that they can score well at included and using a % base means others who can't beat the top score can stand to gain for every improvement they make in their final score which to me will add incentive to keep on trying to beat their previous PB.

I still think we should promote good sportsmanship by always uploading any recordings we've done on the day we make them - or as soon as we're back on our work PC's with Net Access for those like me who have no home Net connection. No "holding back that good recording for the last day just to prevent someone having the chance to beat it".

gb, another decision in rules that sounds fair... No more than 1 of any kind of game, only 1 of pacman sets (pacman, mspacman, jrpacman, etc.) Only one Galaga/Galaxian style game, etc. This will get a good cross section of games to make sure the winner of the tourney will be good all around, rather than just a select department. Also, I am willing to accept scoring system B, still gives you pts for improving, but not having full points for beating all isn't right. Come on.... One last other, all final tie games should be revoted off, rather than by who got it in first... People are mad that someone got a score in first, and that's the only reason they have a 1st, so should it be with our tourney, have a sudden death voteoff or something. My $23.17 worth CP

Ok, couple more rules ideas... One, the tournament top 2-4, ideas on this can be determined, would go head to head in a three game(again, subject to change) play-off to determine the top champ. Also, game vote time. (I will denote the 2pt vote) 1. Super Baseball 2020 (Rule: Play one full game, as many quarters as necessary, highest cash gathered and kept determines winner) 2. Discs of Tron (This game just rocks) 3. Lock 'n Chase (This is for those maze game lovers, not too many play, nice for all on even playing field) 4. Quiz and Dragons (Will take either version) 5. Us vs. Them All are default or approiate TG settings if there are such. The 2 vote one is #2.

I like the one game of each type idea, maybe two of a type if they are different enough (ie. Super Pac Man & Turtles), but a diverse set is important. My concern on the tournament scoring system is ranking all (or at least most) of the participants, not how many points each spot/score is worth. If the Superstars system is adjusted for the number of entrants, which shouldn't be too hard, I don't have a problem with using it for the tournament. I guess that makes my scoring vote a "no preference". I haven't changed my mind on percentage scoring for MARP in general, but with a tournament the participation on each game is about equal so a place rank system isn't fatally flawed. I don't care how the tie game votes are handled.

Damn straight Discs of Tron rocks! I expected a landslide of scores (and being ranked 9th if I was lucky) on that game once the level bug was fixed (it's been fixed a long time), but it never happened. Hopefully the tournament will help.

Aqua, note who had to vote for it, ME! And while we are at that, who has knocked out your firsts on both of those games??? gb, Aqua is another for the progressive system... 4-1 now, isn't it!

Ok, couple more things, One, Ankaroid and any others not functional should be disallowed. Emulation only allows the vaus to move way to slow to have a chance to get it there... Two, K-man (I know this part isnt tourney) I'm assuming it's ZigZag on Galaxian Hardware to make that 500k, right? 3rd) Zwaxy. the board now can't be ordered by medal pts....

-- Chris Parsley (cparsley1@hotmail.com), June 18, 1999.

> the board now can't be ordered by medal pts

that was intended to be like a feature - moving over to the new style of leaderboard.

i think we should have just one type of leaderboard - once we've decided what the gap between scores should be, i guess i'll get rid of the entry on the form for that, too.

do you think i should leave it open so that people can view the board however they want to? i could put a box in which usually says 10,3,1, and allow people to choose their own points-per-medal values if they want to, but i think it's best if we all view the same table.

I'm currently working on getting Twin Galaxies to help sponsor this tournement and furnish Pete (gameboy9) with all the necessary TG settings on games he's missing. I'm bringing up the settings being TG because that will allow the scores from the tournement to be published in the next edition of the book of world records as well as mentioned on their web page. Default can sometimes go both ways, unless it's selected by TG as the right settings on a particular game. I will list a few of my own opinions which I hope will help with this tournement.

1) NO CLONES! of any kind, bootlegs as well!!!! 2) All games set to TG settings, otherwise they will not be considered for the next edition of the book. 3) If a game that's been selected has appeared on Angry's voting page for banned game techniques, this also should apply for the tournement. 4) I don't want to take away anyone's right to vote on a certain game, but take into consideration, that games that use a paddle like arkanoid, are much harder to use with a mouse and most players probably don't have the controls to play this game on which will give a hugh edge to the one or two players that have such a controller. Allthough I think German Krol has done all his Arkanoid games with a mouse.... no-one else including myself (and I have the world record!) can come close to what he can do with a mouse. Hand out some paddle controllers, and that's a different story.

Scoring/upload rules---

Remember when you played these games long ago, and you wanted to fill up that top-10 board on the game with your name on all 10? My suggestion is to have a top-10 with the chance to get as many scores as possible...(I'm sure now Zwaxy is getting ideas on another leaderboard...) This way we can also bend the rule that allows a player to re-submit only a score higher than his previous, but instead within the top 10... Score the games by place, 1 point for 10th up to 9 points for 2nd, and some bonus, like 15 points for first place... or maybe like 30-20-15-11-8-6-4-3-2-1... max per player-100. Forget percentages - let's all fight for position.

After some more thinking I'm solidly behind the place rank system for the tournament. Sorry about being so confusing :P

Oh all right - take my vote off percentage and put it into Rank for the competition.......... OK I was biased about putting up a huge Gyruss score to reduce everyone's points on that game.... but that's just not fair - especially given the way I would be wiped off the board on some of the games that look likely to be included in the tournament.

Woohoo..... only 7 days till voting finishes and playing begins !!!

OK... I think we've decided on a place ranking system - which is probably the best system to use in this instance... just now how are we going to do it? All the ideas have been put on the webpage.

I personally am going with either B or C without the more than one recording / person deal... why? Well take a look at Do Run Run... Dith can probably ring up the entire top ten board... worth 80 points... 80 points that noone will probably get back... it'd be better with just one recording / person - makes things more competitive if you ask me... then again most votes wins here :)

OK... there's my $625.43 cents worth... see yall later :)

-- Gameboy9 (goldengameboy@geocities.com), June 23, 1999.

If we go with place ranking, then it should be just that. No funny stuff with adding bonuses for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. For example, if there's 10 players, then 1st gets 10 pts, 2nd-9, 3rd-8, ..., last gets 1 pt. If no score is submitted, you get 0.

Here's my humble opinion... Mame34 FINAL!! Unless mame35 comes out in time. Anyhthing in between, your just asking for trouble on some games.
